Here is a Kickstarter that I may support (I've vowed to not support any more until I get the ones I have already backed), but this one appears tempting.

I really like how the stretch goals are the hiring of more employees rather than getting a new ship or something silly like that.

Unsung Story on Kickstarter.

Oh man, I'm not too interested in doing anymore Kickstarters but FFT, Ogre Battle, and Tactics Ogre are three of my favorite games ever... Arg, I may have to back it on principle.

*facedrop*

I pretty much have to back this I'm afraid. He's made too many of my all-time favorite games not to.

Some things are kinda :\ though.

Its primary platform is mobile. While its pledge goal is low for such a high profile designer, it is replete with stretch goals that go all the way up to symphony orchestras.

Really it's the mobile focus that bothers me the most. If this thing becomes the thing it wants to be, it'd be like the best mobile game......ever. Which isn't hard because the bar is not that high. I haven't been shown a mobile game yet that rises above the limitations of the platform.

I want to say Peace Walker and Monster Hunter... but that is just hardcore personal opinion.

And I'll admit, my exposure to mobile games is pretty limited since I won't get an AppStore account or spend any money on it. I guess it's more that I haven't seen a mobile game that makes PC gamers go "holy shit" yet, because no one in the PC space talks about them.

Not sure if It counts as mobile, but plenty of old PS2 era JRPGs and SRPGS get mobile phone ports nowadays.
Pretty sure FFT has a mobile port and spinoff, which sucks since those can be on platforms their primary audience actually has an interest in gaming on.

I see that all of you are feeling the same way as me. Kickstarter burnout but can't pass this one up. I still haven't thrown my hat in the ring, but I really, really hope this gets made. Already at 210,000 with only a few days.

I really do despise rewards like "Elite characters classes".  Still, I do love me some turn based tactics RPGing.

Hmm. Yeah, I've been reluctant to back anything else lately too. But this might need to be an exception.

Bear in mind that the Kickstarter funding is explicitly being used to develop the Mac/PC versions of Unsung Story and make the game agnostic of iOS/Android. The game will be mobile-only if the Kickstarter fails.

Quote
Playdek is looking to bring extra funds in to allow for development on additional platforms and to allow for the expansion of the creative team. We are planning to bring out Unsung Story on iOS and Android devices; however we need additional funding in order to deliver the game on requested platforms such as PC and MAC.

Playdek and Yasumi Matsuno will continue to develop Unsung Story regardless of whether or not funding is met. The main focus on the crowd-sourcing isn’t to create the game but rather to bring the game to the platforms requested by our fans and to help further the immersive world being created by Mr. Matsuno.

. . .

In order to do this we turned to Kickstarter, however if this funding is met you aren't going to see an obvious phone game trying to make it's way into the PC/Mac realm. The game will be fully developed for agnostic platform play, meaning that the same game will be received on all platforms. Since we will be able to bring the game out to PC/Mac/Windows Tablets, we will be able to create a much deeper game then we would have if we were just keeping the game on iOS and Android, so in fact the iOS and Android users will be able to receive the benefits as well for this successful campaign since the main platform of the game will shift.

As much as I dislike phone gaming, this seems like a solid business plan to me.

It seems the turn based tactical rpg genre is going through a revival lately. Not only are we getting a brand new title with The Banner Saga, but also a true FFT/Tactics Ogre spiritual sucessor, I'm pretty pleased with this.

I really do hope they don't repeat FFT's and Tactics Ogre mistakes regarding special characters which you gain as the plot progresses. I feel a game like this is far more rewarding when you can build your own characters rather then using absurdly OP characters the story throws at you (read: TG Cid). I also like the idea of tons of different classes but I have to agree with Levi on how "elite classes" that can do what the more ordinary character classes do but better sort of ruin kills the fun of developing characters a little bit.

I'm not too worried about the focus on mobile plataforms. While I never understood mobile consoles and playing games on phones, as long as I get a working PC version I'm fine with it. It doesnt take a powerful plataform to make a good turn based tactical rpg, and mobile plataforms today are a lot more powerful then they used to be. If they add good mod support then the PC community will take care of enhancing the PC version.

Personally I'm fine if it gets on any dedicated gaming device.

I agree, Canopus was ridiculous in TO. Though he's the only really unique Character that stood out to me in battle aside from the Blind Swordsman(Hobrym I think his name was)

Since I never played any of these right when they came out, I was ok using spoilers. There's just no way with a game like TO or FFT that you were going to stumble across even half of it, especially when they're all scenario-restricted. So after my first run at TO, I just started going into game with walkthroughs, not for how to beat them, but just to be sure I didn't miss anything huge.

That said, I think you got way more out of special characters in FFT than in TO. TO you can get away with all your line troops, although the special characters stat lines can be really, really good. (Ashe, for example.)

More it's just I don't like things compromised by design necessities. Take Shadowrun Returns for example. The whole UI is designed for phones and tablets. So buttons are huge. Menus aren't smart or efficient because they have to work with your fingers. There was an absence of hotkeys  at release, might still be. Nothing that ruined the game, but lots of things that left me going "Yeah this would have been better had it been designed as a PC/Mouse/Keyboard UI." There's an assumption out there that you can just slap a mouse into any UI and get the same UX. It's not true.

Yes, this is pretty much mandatory.  Plus Banner Saga made me all excited about backing games again.
