Connecting continents diagonally
« on: January 13, 2014, 09:45:25 pm »

Ok, quick question. In the world map screen, if i have 2 land masses like so:
 ~ L  L L L  ~
 ~ ~ L L ~  ~
 ~ ~ L ~ ~ ~
 ~ ~ ~ L L  ~
 ~ ~ ~ L L  L

Key: ~ is water
         L is land

(assuming they are not connected anywhere else) Are these land masses connected? Could an adventurer walk across? Could an invading civ cross that?

Is this considered an island then?
 ~ ~ L ~ ~
 ~ ~ ~ L ~
 ~ L  L  L L

I'm not sure, but you can check it if you open up the embark screen. There you have the map at the highest resolution.

I wonder if the game has become odd.

The short answer is that it depends.

You can see the embark selection menu as a set of 3 differently-scaled maps. The world map is the most zoomed-out of them all.

What you see on the world map:

≈∩∩∩∩≈≈≈≈
≈≈∩∩≈≈≈≈≈
≈≈X≈≈≈≈≈≈
≈≈≈∩∩≈≈≈≈
≈≈≈∩∩∩≈≈≈

Can be seen zoomed in (Region) as one of the following.

   ∩∩∩∩∩∩∩∩≈ | ∩∩∩∩∩∩∩∩≈
   ∩∩∩∩∩∩∩∩≈ | ∩∩∩∩∩∩∩∩≈
   ∩∩∩∩∩∩≈≈≈ | ∩∩∩∩∩∩≈≈≈
   ≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈ | ≈≈∩∩∩≈≈≈≈  <- Note the difference
   ≈≈≈∩∩∩≈≈≈ | ≈≈≈∩∩∩≈≈≈

Disconnected | Connected

As zoomed out, the main part of the region tile is land, that's what's going to show on the world map.

As such, it depends. An adventurer could pass any of the above regions if they, at the lowest zoom (e.g. Local map) have some sort of crossing. He could even swim it.

AFAIK, civilizations can't cross bodies of water. Hence you can embark on deserted islands without Goblins or Elves budging in.

I have to write something... well here goes:
"A dwarf isn't a dwarf unless he dies the most !!FUN!! of ways", Quote unknown, possibly Armok.

Doktoro Reichard is quite pleased with making a Great Carbonite Trap

Why shouldn't you write with a broken pencil? Because it's pointless!

Another really fast way to tell is while on the screen looking for a place to embark, tab over to the nearby civilizations tab. If you only have dwarves, that means the landmass is cut off from the mainland (or your world doesn't have other civilizations, but that's very rare unless you specifically design a world to be that way)
