City of Gruir, 2180

(I was going to put a big exposition dump here, but I thought better of it. I'll provide exposition as the game progresses. Here's what you need to know: Its the future. There's magic and science fiction tech. You live in in a city called Gruir.)

You wake with the tremor, just like everyone else who tries to sleep-in. Like clockwork, every day at 8 a.m., all over the city. The 'psychics' have it worst of all, but they've learned to wake up before 8. They claim to get visions. They claim to hear screams and grinding metal. All you know is the foreboding feeling that most people describe the tremor as. The fear-mongers on T.V. say that its a sign. The jury's still out on that.
You get dressed and prepare to go to work. Business is good, but dangerous.

What is your occupation?

A.Hit Man
B.Private Investigator
C.Policeman
D.Vigilante

B.Private Investigator

You dress in your old-fashioned suit with your armor underneath. The shell is made of hard plastic wrapped in shock-absorbing synthetic fiber. It covers most of your torso and stops small arms fire. Your entire suit is made of synthetic fiber designed to stop stabbing weapons. For offence you have a small derringer-style kinetic fire-arm. You don't know all the science, but you know it doesn't make much sound when you shoot it. You guess it probably doesn't involve gunpowder.

You head off to your newest lead. The case so far has gone from a simple workplace accident, to something far more sinister. You think that Mr. Atrius is hiding some kind of illegal operation under his refinery on the outskirts of the city. One worker got too close to finding the truth, so they put him through the machinery. They tried to make it look like an accident, but the bereaved suspected foul play and hired you to investigate. The most important question in this case is "whose side are you on?"

A."Someone has to put a stop to whatever nefarious business is going on down there. I need to find the truth."
B."Someone has to defend an innocent job creator. I'll just assure the family that everything is okay."
C."I'm playing them against each other for my amusement and profit."

C."I'm playing them against each other for my amusement and profit."

You take an automated taxi to the Industrial Quarter in Oldtown. After a short walk, you find yourself at the Atrius Refinery. The building is made of old, crumbling bricks, like most in Oldtown. You stalk around to the back of the refinery and find the basement entrance. You bet you can get some money out of Atrius if you get some evidence for whatever's going on down there. Sadly, the exterior basement entrance has a pretty solid padlock on it. You got a tour of the refinery when you began the case, so you know that the interior entrance is guarded 24 hours a day. It stands to reason that someone involved with the business downstairs would have a key.
How will you get into the basement?

A. Shoot the padlock off.
B. Try to pocket the manager's keys.
C. Talk your way past the guards on the inside.

D. Cut the padlock off. Makes less noise that way.
