Generally speaking, the only thing you can do while trapped is become un-trapped. Note that "un-trapped" is something of a sliding scale; it's possible to break free enough to be able to manipulate things nearby, for instance, without being fully mobile and back to full power.

You do still gain power while trapped, but since the only real way to gain power is by succeeding on rolls, your opportunities are somewhat more limited.
