Dead creatures?
« on: January 08, 2014, 12:06:52 pm »

I've been playing DF for quite some time now, and I've never encountered anything like this before:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
At first it looks like a normal (although quite small) Dead/missing list, but I'm in the late autumn of the first year, and I haven't got combat reports of snow banshees or dark freak consorts and I also haven't seen both of those creatures on the map. Does anyone know what the cause of these sudden appearances might be?

The night troll one could be explained by you embarking on a night creature lair and the night creature dying of worldgen related injuries. Sometimes they can get mortal wounds or cumulatively mortal wounds during worldgen and they don't actually die of said wounds until they are loaded.

The demon..., well, that can only be guessed at. Maybe a cavern collapse somewhere?  Check the stocks to see if you can find the corpses. Never heard of demons spontaneously appearing in the death list.

Oh, another possibility is that if the demon or another demon has the cavein dust type extract, it could have killed itself or gotten pushed into an eerie pit.

Yeah, the banshee probably got killed by cave-in dust. Snow is not particularly durable.

or cavern creatures killed it, the various sentient cavern creatures actively attack FBs that enter the caverns.

Jam a door with its corpse and let all the goblins in. Hey, nobody said it had to be a weapon against your enemies.

I don't see how cavern creatures would be able to reach the HFS. Though I once had a fort where an entire "structure" had collapsed, and it only managed to kill one. Managed to cut off access to "Excalibur", sadly.

Cave-ins and dust are the most likely candidates, I think.
