Lack of sieges in Masterwork?
« on: January 08, 2014, 07:01:44 am »

What it says on the tin.  So far, after 5 years and 3,000,000 created wealth with 120,000 exported wealth, and a population of 110 dwarves, I've gotten 2 sieges - 1 by orcs, and one by human bandits, each siege numbering about 15 invaders.  I've also gotten small ambushes, but no truly big sieges with cave dragons, trolls, and goblins numbering more than 100.  In Vanilla, I used to get siege after siege of more than 150 invaders each.  (Possibly related, I've seen that the cities/towns in adventure mode are really really small compared to those in vanilla DF.  Could this be the problem?)

Easiest way is to check population and civs in legends mode. Maybe someone died out in worldgen. But no, MDF has no problems with too few sieges, except if you want it so.

Next fort, enable a few of the Fortress Defense races as well, and you will get more.

Thanks for your answer, Meph.  I actually have all the default races enabled except for warlocks, and the minotaurossi from Fortress Defense.  Plus it's not really the frequency of the sieges that's bothering me, but the size.  15 soldiers is hardly a siege, after all, and it's been this way for my last three fortresses (all with different worlds), so maybe I'm just unlucky.

120 dwarves is another trigger, POPULTION_TRIGGER:5, which is used on Automatons and Frost Giants...

The size of sieges I cant affect, its mostly how large the population in worldgen is, and how many sites they have and so forth.

It really depends on where you settle.
The rule of thumb is that the more you kill, the more will arrive. (At least from my experience.)
So train your soldiers and grind away all the petty invaders.

I find there is a huge variation.  Many of my fortresses recently I've seen practically no big sieges, or perhaps one small one every two or three years even with many millions in created wealth.  The civilization button shows the invader races alive and at war, but I never checked legends.  Then again, I started a fort a few months ago where 150 invaders arrived before the first dwarf caravan.  Needless to say, that fort didn't survive.  I tried to reembark and got ambushed and killed off before my replacements could even run indoors.  Typically now If I get to year 10 or 20 without a siege I start over.  I suppose I should add the fortress defense races.

As well, generally the older your fort (may be tied to wealth, but that's a natural side effect of time :P) the larger sieges become. The first siege from a race is almost always small, 10-20. Then next is usually 30-50, then it gets larger until ABOUT 75-140 (varying by race). Ambushers tend to be smaller in number around 45-60 max in numbers from my experience.

As well, it seems your location is key to how often you get sieged. Build inside of a deep mountain 'basin' or in the extreme north or south of the map, you'll see traders and sieges alike take a lot longer to begin to arrive. It also depends on the amount of civilizations you have (advanced world gen, near the bottom it says civilization amount or similar, it's default 40 I believe) can alter the rates big time. 40 civs vs 300 is a huge gap in sheer amount of population that COULD siege you, and survive. Less civilizations means titans, FB, etc, are more likely to knock off civilizations as well as internal wars between them, more likely a main race or 3 will kill off some of the other races before your world gen is done, especially if you wait for over 100+ years to end world generation.

If any of that makes sense.

This won't help you with you current world.  But when you gen a world you can hit a key to export world data.  It goes into the dwarf fortress folder.  I always looks at world site/population to make sure no major races died out.  It can be entertaining for unique worlds too.  Recently had a world generate with 30,000 Kobolds and less than a thousand of any other race.
