Flying vertically and horizontally through a slit?
« on: January 07, 2014, 06:06:59 pm »

So I was in the midst of a project when a flying Forgotten Beast that had spawned months earlier somehow found it's way to my main mineshaft that I thought I had sealed air 'n' beast tight. Apparently not. Now I'm trying to make sense of how it happened and the options seem to be limited to:

1. Simultaneous vertical and horizontal movement through a slit (basically a down stairs that goes down to nowhere i.e. a wall)
2. Flying through a fortification.
3. Teleportation.

The wiki says #2 is not possible and I'm under the impression that #3 ain't either, which leaves #1 so here's a sketch:

Upper level

GGGGG
GXXXG
GXXXG
GXXXG
GGGGG

Lower level

.GGGG
.GXXG
.wXXG
.GXXG
.GGGG

Edit: Added for clarification

Below lower level

.GGGG
.GGGG
.GGGG
.GGGG
.GGGG

/edit

X = up&down staircase
G = gabbro
w = built wall
. = open air cavern

Now, is it possible that the FB got past that slit over one of the gabbro walls?! If yes then OMG. If no then WTF.

Is there anything below "lower level"? Because if it's like this (side view):

GXXXG
GXXw.
. . . . .
. .B . .
GGGGG

Then the FB (represented by 'B') can fly up it I believe. If not, I have no idea. Maybe some screenshots would help diagnose the problem.

Nope, just untouched gabbro below - I added the lowest level in my first post to clarify.

yes, I think the wiki mentions exactly situations like this and the monster flew diagonally up into your fortress

Flyers can go up diagonally.

They don't bee line for the gap to come kill your dudes, that's why it took a few months to get in.  Somehow it's random wanderings have to bring it to the right spot to pass through.

The only thing that I recall from the wiki about moving diagonally betweeb z-levels (aside from ramps) was an article about building destroyers and their (in)ability to destroy stuff on other z-levels depending on pathfinding issues but I don't think the scenarios outlayed there where similar with this incident. Anyone know a wiki reference off the top their head that addresses this one?

nope, I looked quickly and couldn't find it easily. Maybe it can be added to the creature atributes: flying page
