Is there an easy way to see how many clothes you need of each type?

If you set a count using the dfhack workflow tool, will that specify the total number of items in play, or just the surplus not owned by any dorf?

Yup, the surplus. I wish the dwarves were satisfied with at most 1 extra outfit.  The way they horde clothes is crazy.  I know getting rid of cabinets can help, but I'm a stickler for rooms to have at the very least 1 bed, 1 coffer, and 1 cabinet.

Goblins tend to supply me with enough clothes, the rest I buy from the dwarf or elf caravan. Only when too much clothing gets X(damaged)X do I make some of my own. If stuff is just damagd with the x, they'll just have to shut up and wait for the next goblinite caravan

Hm.  Do dwarves get happiness bonuses from having better than average clothing?  Or is it only worthwhile to dye and decorate them if you're selling textiles?

Yeah, I get tons of stuff that way, and dfhack r3 has a tool to make them ditch the X()X stuff.  But I was hoping there would be a way to see the actual shortfall.

Thanks, everyone, for your answers - they help.

At my fortress it freezes nine months of they year, and they're frequently unhappy about snowstorms.  Does the game take this into account for clothing needs?  (I've never run across anything that suggests that it does.)

I think it does but I'm not sure. I think dwarves freeze faster with less or no clothing but I might not be remembering correctly.

It takes a lot to make them freeze to death in the first place though

As far as I know, they do not.

Clothing does factor into insulation against freezing, but it's a pretty minor effect as far as I'm aware.  Being fat protects against it too, and in the long run it would probably contribute more.  Unless you're embarking on a glacier it's unlikely you'd ever notice.

Hm.  Do dwarves get happiness bonuses from having better than average clothing?  Or is it only worthwhile to dye and decorate them if you're selling textiles?

Dwarves don't pay attention to the quality of their clothes at all, unless they're worn out.  They'll be just as happy with scavenged average quality clothing with goblin symbols stitched into them that you scavenged from a siege as they will from masterful quality stuff you produce in house.  It's mostly for flavor and selling.

I'm also pretty confident that the happiness boost they get from picking up a new set of clothes is the same regardless of value.
