Refusing to bury dead?
« on: January 04, 2014, 06:44:25 pm »

I can't get my dwarves to actually bury their dead. I have plenty of caskets/sarcophagi/coffins. I have extra ones. They're all set to allow burial of citizens and pets. All of my dead bodies are currently in my corpse/refuse stockpiles. My whopping 3 dwarves (yeah...) are uninjured. Their labors are set to allow burial, furniture moving (to move the last of my slabs/coffins around...five ghosts = desperation), and that's it.

What do they do? Pickup equipment, store item in stockpile, pen/pasture large animal. NONE OF THOSE SKILLS ARE ENABLED. I'm starting to get an uptick in ghosts/they're not going away because they have an assigned tomb, but no one will bother to lay their bodies in them!

Any ideas?

Put them in a squad and activate them to clear off any tasks, then deactivate them. See what happens then.

Activate - not sure on that one.

I added them to one of my squads. Any other stuff I need to do? Wiki isn't totally helpful on this one. Currently, they're eating, drinking, and sleeping.

Edit: I stationed them at a random place, and still they're just picking up equipment and chaining an animal. Stupid friggin' dwarves!

It sounds like your dwarves move them, so forbidding's not the issue. Did you allow the coffins / boxes to be used for burials? After placements, they're at default turned off. You might want to double-check that they're ready for usage, and that no doors are forbidden, passages blocked or ramps removed.

ALternatively, you could produce Stone Slabs, then engrave them. This should calm the uneasy spirits.

Yes, they're all enabled to be used for burials. They even show that they're the tomb for Urist McUselessness. And I can go out to the corpse stockpile and find Urist McUselessness' body. I don't mess with doors, all passages are at least 2 wide, and no ramps.

I made stone slabs for some of the ghosts to help, because they weren't burying the bodies. Problem is, with 3 dwarves who inexplicably don't do what they're supposed to, it has taken me literally all day to make about 30 coffins and engrave 3 measly slabs.

They're even refusing to dig. I enabled digging for one, I have umpteen bazillion picks due to the umpteen bazillion sieges and looting from dead bodies. Nada. No digging for my alternate trade depot so my traders stop going melancholy/stark raving mad/berserk (can't build where it USED to be because there's a copper bow in it and they won't dump that). No digging to designate a bigger dump area, not that they really NEED it, but just to have it near the corpse/refuse stockpiles.

I might try getting rid of the corpse/refuse stockpile and see if that wakes them up.

Oh, lovely. One of my 3 dwarves is in prison for violation of production order. I HATE MAYORS. I HAVE 3 DWARVES, WE'RE NOT GOING TO MAKE YOUR STUPID FIGURINES.

!!FUN!!

Kill all your burrows, and if you're still pasturing animals, kill your pastures too. Animals can wait.

It could be that if they're practically the only survivors left, and there's soooo many *socks* to loot, they're busy doing stuff like that rather than hauling corpses. Tried undesignating other hauling jobs?

Sounds like the end times are coming. You should have your survivors hole up in a vault with food and have them dig a new exit, and hope they survive untill reinforcements from the mountainhome arrives.

All other labors are turned off. A ghost killed my jailed guy, so my two dwarves are currently set to engraving/furniture hauling (PLEASE GET ME ENGRAVED SLABS), and burial. Instead, they store items in stockpile.

I've been nursing this one along since yesterday, when I was down to a melancholy vampire and a child, both of whom are *ahem* no longer with us.

If you're really desperate, forbid everything on the map except the things you need them to work on. But seriously, check for burrows.

Burrows are off. I got one to start engraving memorials...we'll see how long I can last! Now to build the slab to get rid of one more ghost...

You could remove all the stockpiles except the things you want hauled.

In the end, I had a FB in my fortress, and my mayor did nothing because of it, except put animals the FB had scared out of pasture into pasture, eat, drink, sleep, and get possessed. At 2330 last night, I decided to end it (as he'd never do anything else because of the beast, and because I still didn't have a trade depot thanks to the previous FB and, therefore, would never get any more migrants as the liaison went nuts due to lack of depot.

It was great while it lasted...

So I started a new fortress, but the dwarves still aren't burying their dead...

Check your work orders (o menu). Did you accidentally set dwarves to ignore bodies?

No, it's allowed. They just make it last priority somehow, despite the ghosts wandering around. All the bodies I could see have been finally buried, but I had to do some damage control with rapidly making them some slabs to engrave and set up.
