Rome Total War 2 was meant to be a huge bust...

To be fair, most Total War games start out as busts, just look at Empire.

A lot of the bugs have been fixed, and there are some pretty great mods being made for it, at the moment. Not to mention that it's still being updated. The AI is still pretty bad, though. But again, Total War, the AI is always bad.

Shogun 2 is probably a better buy at the moment, though.

Edit: Although personally, 2013 was a pretty mediocre year. There were quite a few great games, here and there, but most of the games I was really looking forward to, are being released in 2014.

Saints Row 4

Saints Row 4 was an expansion pack to Saints Row 3, set at full retail price.

On the other hand, 2013 brought us GTA V, and it's one of the best games made in the past couple of years.

I don't think games like SR4 and GTAV are really relevant, as they're clearly designed for console. 2013 has been a pretty good year for gaming imo, and the real shining part is more indie games and mods for the PC. The big PC-exclusive titles by major companies have all been pretty mediocre, yes, but the vacuum has been filled by quality games from lesser known companies.

If 2013 was such a bad year, how come I kept saying "Dang, I wish I had some spare cash to spend on game?"   :P

Eh in my opinion total wars pretty much went to shit after Medieval 2, Empire -can- be fun with the big mods. (Which still can't change much)

I randomly got Shogun 2 ages ago during a sale and found it the worse piece of shit total war I've ever played and quite cemented me in the idea that the total war brand has just gone to complete shit.

I'd say Medieval 2 is still the best buy of all the total wars, especially as Europa Barbarorum 2 seems to be actually making headway recently(One of the Devs recently posted a playtest) and beyond that its pretty much the most modded total war with quite a bit of variety of mods you can try out, like Stainless Steel, Third Age Total War, Westeros Total war, etc, etc. (Not to mention that Medieval 2 is significantly less of a hard drive burden.)

Why do people keep talking about GTA V in a PC topic?

Because someone decided to bring it up again after the person who originally mentioned it apologised. Funny how that works.

I spotted it on the the first page.

2013 has been a memorable year for small studios/indies and a terrible year for AAA's. Good review sites had an easy time whittling down their 'best of' lists and a harder time with their 'worst of' categories, with AAA's clogging the latter. There was usually a clear worst but runners ups were close to each other. How do you get a 2-3 behind the worst when there's 20 equally bad ones and almost all big labels?

I think 2013 had been more the year of kickstarter and alpha finding. There have been so many good games but they won't be coming out till 2014. I think mostly 2013 has been a disappointment for games being a PC gamer but with all the alphas/betas floating around that's made up for it with the promise of these games coming out soon and you get to watch the develop and grow.

2013 was a great year for indie games, I had tons of fun with Skullgirls and Shelter. As for AAA games, Bioshock Infinite and Far Cry 3 with Blood Dragon probably the best buys i got. I did get Battlefield 4 and i dunno much for the complaints about being the same thing as BF3 as it did added crapton more ways to die (it IS easier to die) plus its more broken than BF3 at launch XD, i enjoy the game and the fact its the only few games that will shove 64 people into one map.

Yeah it was only a year where the HUGE games were "meh"

But in terms of "Small great games" this is probably one of the better years.

A lot of people seem to be making incorrect assumptions so let me address them in the space below:

First assumption: OHMIGOSH OP YOU WRONG YOU SO WRONG.

You'll notice that the title of the thread: "Was 2013 a Bad Year for PC Games?" implies a question not a statement.

Second assumption: OP YOU JUST THINK ITS BEEN A BAD YEAR BECAUSE YOU PREORDER AAA GAMES.

If I pre-ordered AAA games at full price why would I have started a thread questioning if there are actually any great games in the last year worth buying?

Third assumption: WELL THIS GAME AND THIS GAME AND THIS GAME WAS RELEASED SO THAT MAKES IT A GOOD YEAR.

One or two good games does not a good year make. PC missed out on all the best titles such as "The Last of Us" and "GTA5" which has been acclaimed as the Game of the Year already by several reviewers. Meanwhile we got a whole slew of shit titles such as Aliens Colonial Marines; Rome Total War 2; Simcity; The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct and a whole bunch of rehashes Football Manager 2014; Battlefield 4; etc. Companies that have a history with making good games came off the rails [for example Bethesda who now are producing ELDER-SCROLLS 6: CHEAP-WOW-RIP-OFF] and a whole bunch of games were 'Kick-started' many which will be developed for awhile then discarded like yesterdays leftovers such as Starforge and Towns. And indie games did have a good year but with the exception of Dwarf Fortress 99% indie games lack depth and lastability [point me to the Skyrim of indie games]. You play them for a week, maybe two then all their tricks have been seen and there's nothing left to do. The year did have some good releases like Heart of the Swarm, State of Decay, etc but calling it a good year based on a couple of successes is really ignoring the big picture here.

Forth assumption: WELL I'M STILL GOING TO YELL ABOUT HOW THIS HAS BEEN A GOOD YEAR BECAUSE I NEED TO DEFEND PC.

OK generic antagonistic voice that I have created to have a dialogue with... I am not saying that PC is dying or that it is not a good platform... But even good platforms have bad years... Most people operate on Windows and heck Windows only release good versions of their OS every second cycle... Maybe instead of treating the thread like an argument you might actually use it as a point of discussion on what games are actually hot lately and which have been disappointments...
