That whole long post of yours is completely incoherent there Ronin. Please don't make threads if you can't handle people disagreeing with you.

I, for one, would be satisfied with a 'meh' year for gaming; it'd give me a chance to whittle down my backlog.

The silly thing is no one was really like totally disagreeing. There was actual discussion.

Though I still don't get what was supposed to be so great about "The last of us"

It's just a boring, slow clumsily written and paced third person stealth/shooter game. My wife couldn't even force herself through it after a while trying to get into it and gave it away.

It's still the only gift she ever gave away.

I say PC gaming isn't missing much if that's what people are screaming about.

Seems like a perfectly normal year to me. Tons of lackluster titles, mountains of shovelware, some decent releases, and a few gems for both AAA and Indie on Console and PC.

And indie games did have a good year but with the exception of Dwarf Fortress 99% indie games lack depth and lastability [point me to the Skyrim of indie games]. You play them for a week, maybe two then all their tricks have been seen and there's nothing left to do. The year did have some good releases like Heart of the Swarm, State of Decay, etc but calling it a good year based on a couple of successes is really ignoring the big picture here.

I'd say that most games period lack depth and lastability. Can't even count how many AAA games I've finished in one week and never touched again. The Last of Us, which you mentioned as a candidate for GOTY, was a 2-3 sitting game.

The big difference between an AAA and Indie titles that I played for a weekend and never touched again? The Indie titles didn't cost $60 at release.

The year did have some good releases like Heart of the Swarm, State of Decay, etc but calling it a good year based on a couple of successes is really ignoring the big picture here.

If Heart of the Swarm is your example of a good release from this year, no wonder you're asking if it was a bad year for PC gaming! ;D

Haven't played The Last of Us, so I can't judge.  But just like he said a couple good PC titles don't make for a good year, a couple good console games not ported to PC don't make for much missed out on, either.  And GTA V will make the transition eventually.  If we really wanted to turn this into a classic PC vs Console flamewar, I could point out how the underwhelming next gen console releases have been great for PC :P

2013 brought us Europa Universalis 4, this year couldn't have been better for games! :D

Although to be honest I didn't play too many games that came out 2013 so I can't really attest to much.  :-\

Well really we aren't quite going to get a consensus because there have been very few games everyone can rally under as the "great game of 2013".

Which is fine.

I'm just going to throw in my two cents, 2013 was a shit year for gaming in general. No matter what you liked. Sure we had some gems, but what years has been complely devoid of good games.

Also, the Last of Us is over hyped as fuck. You really can't call The Walking Dead shit, and in the same breath praise TLOU. Unless you're an avid JRPG fan, you aren't missing out on anything of any real significance by not owning a console.

That's kinda  funny since I often hear Skyrim lacks a lot of  depth and lasting compared to its ancestors. To an astonishing degree. You can play any game for hundreds of hours when you can turn it into "Dead or Alive meets Conan the Barbarian with Futa Argonians in the snow" with a few short clicks.

EDIT: ONE MORE THING
Game Reviews, ESPECIALLY, ones made by journalists should be taken with a grain of salt.  Professional game reviewers have almost no journalistic integrity, and AAA gaming pretty much relies on hype and advertising as its lifeblood.

To be fair I'm pretty sure he meant the shitty FPS game cash in that was also on consoles too. But to be honest it looks to be about as fun as TLOU. Which isn't much.

2013 was a great year for playing video games, just like every year. It was better than some previous years because there are lots of options for multiplayer. I played a lot of left 4 dead 2 and payday 2. One of those things did not come out this year, but I listed it because "was 2013 a good year for PC games " is a meaningless question. Unless you've got the attention span of a rat, there's already plenty of free or cheap stuff to enjoy with your friends and make 2014 a great year for playing video games.

(removed)

The Walking Dead was good but that wasn't 2013 was it?

No 2013 games had the wow factor... Skyrim had the wow factor... Shogun 2 Fall of the Samurai had the wow factor... Crusader kings 2 had the wow factor... Simcity 4 had the wow factor... No wow factor this year :(.

But is lack of replayability a bad thing? If something's good, it's good. Regardless of whether you do it for a day or for a year. I consider longevity to be separate from the overall quality of a game (or anything else really).

Now as someone else already posted, paying 50-60$ for a weekend's worth of videogaming is a bit excessive. But if you've got disposable income then 5-15$ for a good game doesn't seem that bad. Whether it's finished in two or twenty sittings.
