It is generally thought that nanobots will consume the world all by themselves. However things are not that simple. Efficiency goes down considerably with each addition. Power generation, reproduction, manipulation, communication, calculation and memory all take their toll. A nanobot capable of creating a grey goo situation won't have enough processing power to think of anything beyond where the closest particles are, and is easy to stop after a weakness is found.
The sample of nanobots currently sitting in a heavily reinforced container has the same goals as one might expect, but does not follow the usual rules. Contact with air will cause immediate oxidization and losing power will cause them to instantly go inert, but even this sample is intelligent enough to design weaponry, power systems, armour and a way to escape. It was recovered from a crashed alien ship with far greater technology than those who recovered it. It is unknown why it crashed.
The sample is placed into a hastily made observation room, seperated from the observers by a thick piece of reinforced glass, and presented with a pile of raw materials and batteries. Its progress is carefully monitored. The nanobots slowly inch their way to the materials and construct a temporary shell to house themselves. More materials are presented after a long period of inactivity. Enough to construct a new entity, You.
