One thing that did happen was that, as I was downloading drivers, the screen resized to 800x600, then the computer crashed. Turning it back on, it was still that tiny resolution, which I changed manually, but I'm not sure what happened or if I should take any certain action.
If that was during graphics driver installation, the first bit (screen resizing to a lower resolution) sounds normal, but the crash doesn't sound normal at all. Maybe check your graphics drivers again?

Agreed, i'd double check to make sure you aren't using the windows default pci svga driver. It can, IIRC, go up to 1024x768x32bit color on pretty much anything recent.

It WON'T enable any of the 3d features of the card though. You need the 3rd party drivers for that.

Just go into device manager, and see what is listed as the display.

Also make sure the monitor is connected to the graphics card rather than the motherboard!

It is in fact connected to the gpu. I had a tech savvy friend tell me "No use the white cord, connect it to the graphics card not the motherboard." as I was putting the stuff together. That was very helpful.

Alright, I guess there is something wrong with the drivers.

Under the display adapter:

Quote from: device status
Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)

and under the resources tab:

"The device isn't using any resources because it has a problem".

I'm not sure what to do.

Windows vista and newer enforces digital signatures on all kernel land code, including device drivers.  There are a number of reasons for this, system security being one, but the primary reason for it is prevent breaking Protected Media Path on DRMed movies. :)

The really real drivers for your cards from the chipset maker will (probably) have WHQL digital signatures, and will install correctly.

Is this an nvidia card, or an AMD card?

Yes. The asus drivers might not be WHQL certified (signed), but the ones straight from AMD should be.

Alright, nevermind apparently. I restarted my computer to install about 100 or so windows updates, and now the problem seems to have fixed itself, and Magic 2014 works like a charm. I just need to try every other game I like to see how it performs now!

Would it be possible to get a few benchmarks?  A mate of mine wants me to build him a PC and has a similar budget.

Can you instruct me how to do this?

This software will display your framerate.  Leave recording off for accurate results.

So looking at this I seem to understand the basics, but what about installing an OS?
How would you even get online to download it without having it in the first place?
Or would you have to do the "put it on a flash drive and transfer it" thing?

Curious because when this computer eventually goes in a few years I want to build a PC and be prepared for that.

At the (small) risk of hijacking someone else's thread, here's a short reply:
Yes, installing an OS on a newly assembled PC may initially sound like a catch-22 situation (need internet to get OS, need OS to get internet). There are at least 2 ways around it though: 1, as you suggested, use a flash drive as an installation disk; or 2, you could transfer the OS from your old PC onto the hard drive before you bolt everything into place.
