Redundancy is the answer for glass cannons in lower tiers. Just add more (hidden) wheels or hover blades.

love low tiers, I had load of fun with a t4 plasma in tier 1 trolling people.

back in my day you could have a t5s laser (now t10) on a flyer in t1 moving by recoil... fun times.

But but you've pretty much pointed out that each weapon has its niche, Mattk :S

i dont beleive two sniper/arty style weapons that can one hit kill you, then a sprayer which actually involves some more fun planning to defend against is a very good balance of weaponry. I feel like plasma in particular defeats the point of actually designing a bot.

Then make a hovercraft. Plasma pretty much HAS to score a direct hit on a hovercraft to damage it. Railguns are still annoying, though.

yeah that is what I do, thin hovercraft with some frontal plates:

I managed to kill a couple plasma flyer with lucky hits while they just shoot the ground around me

I need some plates on bottom to absorb stray hits from under the bot, and I am done - damn CPU limits XD

Electroplates can counter plasma really well, and, IIRC, they also counter railguns.

So once you get those, you do have to design.

I have electroplates. they dont do shit. Just got one shotted by some dude with 6 plasma mounted, how fun.

Hover and especially fliers dominate plasma. Be careful with electroplates they cant hit the block the plate is anchored to.

Well, i have what i can covered with them.

The point is, in a game where the design of your craft is supposed to you know matter, on-shot game mechanics that dont even require precise aim are retarded. you just blast away at close range and lead a bit at long range and oops splash damage took out half his bot haha.

Make sure you attach your electroplates to the most armored blocks you have, the blocks that you mount things on should generally be priorities for upgrading.

Also keep in mind that people may be using plasma cannons a couple of tiers higher than the match, and if your electroplates are a couple of tiers lower, they will be fairly ineffective.

and thats just silly (the higher teirs thing)

Another beef: why does my teir 3 vehicle repair for 400, but as soon as it tips over to teir 4 repairing it costs 800.

edit: this game is terrible gonna go play something that someone spent more than 5 minutes thinking about when designing

Well, as soon as you change tiers your income also increases.
I grind using my tier-6 to get parts for my fun-er-to-use tier-4.
It works fine, really.

Having thicker layers of armor also works well against plasma. If you only have a one or two layers of armor plasma can one-shot you much easier then if it has to blast through 3 or 4.

My Frigate design can be one-shotted if they hit the exact right spot, but I also regularly go through matches with it taking hits from Plasma, Rails, and SMGs without ever dying. It gets trashed, but I can take a lot of punishment and still function pretty well in it.

My flyer, on the other hand, is fragile and can easily get one-shotted by just about anything.

So I think part of the issue is less bad game design and more that a lot of people have designs that are too fragile for the weapons being used.

Granted, I think it'd be a bit more fun if damage was lowered across the board so that one-hit kills were much less common, but it really doesn't have to be as bad as people try to make it out to be.

I just tried playing this game, and honestly, unless they change things for the better, I don't think I'll be playing again.

The problems come from a mixture of low-tier flyers with railguns (which are nearly impossible to hit without one on your team), my hoverships being utterly moronic (See: Spinning in circles when they go over a slight bump), my teammates being utter dipshits (Five guys are coming at us! Oh, you've come to help us? Kthnxbye) and the plasma cannons on my ship occasionally deciding to spontaneously spin a round mid battle, despite them facing the right way.

At least it is only a slight bump. I've had teammates be utter assholes and flip my robocraft while going over a bump. And at low-tier plasma and rail are king, SMGs are utterly worthless till you get better armour.

Eh, I feel obliged to ask one of those obvious questions: Do people use practice mode to see how well their creations handle before jumping into a battle? It strikes me that some things like greatorder's hovercraft handling issues could be reduced or even resolved by hopping in there..

Re: lasers/SMGs: I still use them. They're very flexible - and some might say too flexible - for their price, tested up to T6 atm.

Re: flying bots: I find them to be a high risk, high reward bot design, like with RL.
Pros:
    *much less susceptible to plasma
    *aerial bombardment is very, very useful, even if you're not terribly accurate
    *freedom of the skies means you are the first line of offense/defense
Cons:
    *much more susceptible to SMG/rails
    *every component is vital, redundancy typically keeps you afloat long enough to be killed
    *you are now a priority target
