So, a friend introduced me to this and I must say I'm having fun. Until the railguns and plasma bombardment show up, that is, but fun nonetheless.

Are there any decent low tier hoverblade/hovercraft designs floating around, or do I just recreate a Tau Hammerhead and hope for the best? :3

You can go back a few pages and look at my Frigate design. It works pretty well at any tier. The only thing not obvious about its construction in the pictures is that it has internal hover blades as well, so most of the core of the ship is actually pretty hollow. I do like to put decent armor as a structure inside (connecting all of the major pieces of the ship), though, to help offset the fragility of the construction style.

Jesus this game has gotten worse since I last played it. If you die you don't get any points, even if your team wins. No sacrifical rushes.
And I do mean no points, since you have to spend them all on repairing your bot.

Well, not quite true. You still make points if you managed to do a lot of damage/kill people/get base capture points before you die. But, yeah, being a shield for your buddies and dying while they do all the damage is pretty much guaranteed to make you lose money or at best break even on the match, no matter how useful you were.

The game seems oddly optimized to go for the single 2x bonus on your first win with multiple robots rather than attempting to get points from playing a single robot multiple times. Especially since railguns can take you out before you get a chance to do anything, so you're often stuck running multiple matches at little to no reward before you can get a win.

I've been trying to make an insanely fast but controllable flying robot to avoid railgun fire. Not been successful.

I'd guess you need a very low mass, but I don't understand if there's drag in this game or just maximum velocity for jet engines.

I'd wager the only dedicated drag is in the helium. Otherwise it's just thrust vs weight.

Wow. That speedster is so fast it actually goes up that mountain and crosses the map to assassinate the enemy in mere moments for the win.
I need a better computer so I can play this again.  :(  Darned overheating crashes.

I don't really have much trouble with rail guns anymore; of course, that's because I switched to rail guns myself for one of my robots and learned to click before they do. For my tier 10 SMG bot, though, I just use cover and kill them while they reload (and have fun with the reduced number of tier 10 rail gunners).

As a fragile little 3-gun railgunner, they ruin my day. Not very common, but when they do show up they're on your side of the map before you know what to do, & don't come from standard paths.
So I'm kinda sabotaging myself by talking about them.

Are you sure? How'd you test? Put a block of heavy cubes at the end of an arm? Try with hoverblades & all that?

That doesn't seem right at all. I know I've had to add helium to one of my designs because the front was way too heavy compared to the back and it kept dragging on the ground.

Just tested with a 10-long rod with a pilot seat at one end (15 kg) and a weighted cube at the other (15 kg). Lift was provided by three T2 jets at either end, though unless different movement blocks calculate center of mass in different ways that shouldn't matter. If center of mass is calculated traditionally, it should be in the exact center of the rod and the robot would rise straight up. If center of mass is instead set as being the pilot seat (to simplify calculations as the robot is destroyed, or whatever other reason) then three engines worth of thrust should be acting on a significant lever arm and the robot should rotate around the pilot seat.

The craft moved straight upwards, supporting the theory that center of mass is calculated traditionally.

EDIT: Furthermore, weight even slightly out of balance with the expected center of mass (on either side of the fourth of ten cubes) leads to a dramatic turn around the pilot seat. I'd check this with hoverblades or something, but it turns out I never played this often enough to get out of tier two, so my hoverblades no longer exist. Sad day.

Seconding all of this, although my experience is mainly with T2-3 bots where you can definitely break even, and even make small profits if you die without firing a shot. Although I have managed to cap the enemy base without dying or dealing any damage and got tech points but very few (<10) RP.
Also, since you can swap cubes between various designs without penalty, you can rake in the RP with that first victory of the day without having too many weapon cubes.


Btw, does anyone know if stacking hoverblades one on top of another reduces the amount of lift you get?

I don't think so. And they provide more than enough lift anyway. Stacking them just provides good backup, (I recommend attaching them to disparate blocks, that way one can get chunked without the other following suit).

Keep in mind, SMGs increase ROF as you add more, and cap out at 6. More than that is just backup, (which is important if your gameplan involves eating lasers to the face & dishing it out in kind).

Armor cubes get HELLA expensive.

Latest update was pretty big. A whole bunch of blocks go removed (you got a refund on them). Mostly low level wings, hoverblades, helium, and the like, but also several levels of the Team Radar receiver. And probably other stuff I'm not thinking of.

Completely messed up quite a few of my robot designs. My Frigate is ok, but my other hover bot got thrown all of out whack and my flyer is basically useless until I figure out the new balancing mechanics for it.
