After the update, when I go to the log-in screen, the game tells me my client is outdated and I need to run the game via the launcher to update.

After I do this, there seems to be nothing to download.

Has anyone else had this issue?

EDIT: Turns out it's my own fault, as I closed the game out during an update.

Don't like the laser balance. It's made my armour basically useless.

Every time I get shot, it takes off a huge chunk of it. As in, a single shot takes out about 5 blocks.

yep, but if you say that you are treated as an heretic.

Except mass is in Kg. Just look it up in the 'Q' menu.

As for thrusters, they only fire if you press a direction key, so add a lot of rearward-facing thruster and see how many you can rise with normal thruster. Since you know g from your previous experiments, you can figure the thruster's mass.

I actually wish we had more infos about you whole ship. Total mass, TWR, top speed...
But his g from previous experiments is wrong, since he didn't take the weight of his trusters into account.

Indeed the g is wrong, but I figured out the right value.

I just checked the q menu, and you are right, the mass is given in kg, however, this makes no sense with the thrust given on thruster.
So either the figures of thrust are a 1000 times lower than stated, or mass is a 1000 times higher.
I think they made a mistake when inputting the units(maybe they are silly Americans who doesn't understand SI units)

In the case that the units in the game are correct, a ship with 1 block + seat + 2 thrusters(m=30kg, F=96kN) would have an acceleration of 3200m/s^2. That means that after firing the thruster for 1½ second, you would be at escape velocity. This is clearly ridiculous!

So let's assume that it's supposed to be tonnes, or that the thrust is supposed to be in newtons and not kilonewtons.

The ship is simply a seat and 6 blocks.

I did an experiment by placing a plastic block at one end, and a thruster pointing up at the other. The craft was stable, which means a thruster has 5T(kg, whatever) of mass.

If I recalculate g including the mass of the thrusters, I get g=96N/55kg=1.75.

and so the quest towards standardized crafts begin

Why, thank you!

Do you need to know the amount of thrust you need to make a certain mass hover?

i don't do fliers, i'm just excited that someone's actually going ahead and calculating this stuff

what would interest me in particular is well

slopes and shit

i have a tank that's had a hard time with inclinations, to the point of getting stuck at ridiculously tiny angles until i upgraded the wheels generously and added t3 thrusters

what is this "overburden" they are speaking of in the wheel descs, how does this apply to my designs as a whole - should i dump helium tanks inside the tank or go for more wheels instead

what is the friction that mars soil provides

that sort of stuff?

Slowpoke, if powered wheels are going faster than their top speed, they cause braking force. Fast cars are thus either rocket-propelled with steering wheels or hightier dual drive with no rockets unless its too heavy to go at top speed.

Do adding hoverblades limit heigh as motor wheels limit speed?

What Aklyon said!

investigating friction:
This is kind of tough to figure out without a speedometer, but I shall try my best.

Figuring out the friction between blocks and the ground would be pretty easy, but not that useful, since we are talking wheels here.

My initialness thoughts are that friction is actually very low, but that was not really your problem. Your problem is that you can't go up inclines, and that is actually very easy to calculate.(when I say easy it means a I have to read up on horsepower)

When going up an incline, the object is subjected to sin(Theta)*g*m force backwards. In order to go up the hill, you have to overcome this force(or drive really fast when you hit the hill).

One HP will keep 75 kg moving at a constant speed, against the force of gravity(1 earth g), so 1 HP will move 75kg*sin(Theta)/(g/local-g) up a slope.
This is getting a bit complicated because HP is a stupid unit, but still.

Time to break out the calculator(maple):
So say you want to drive up a 30 degree incline, and you have a 100 block, with a mass of 500kg, you'd need:

This is assuming that the HP given in the game is Earth HP, since a Mars HP would be a lot a lot more.

Now we just need to test this somehow.... and for someone to verify my maths

By the way, they're bhp in the game. What does that mean?

Quote from: Wikipedia, Horsepower article
Brake horsepower (bhp) is the measure of an engine's horsepower before the loss in power caused by the gearbox, alternator, differential, water pump, and other auxiliary components such as power steering pump, muffled exhaust system, etc. Brake refers to a device which was used to load an engine and hold it at a desired rotational speed. During testing, the output torque and rotational speed were measured to determine the brake horsepower. Horsepower was originally measured and calculated by use of the "indicator" (a James Watt invention of the late 18th century), and later by means of a De Prony brake connected to the engine's output shaft.

...wait what the fuck are they implying here? i thought wheels are quite literally motors connected to a wheel what could be causing the loss in power

Brake Horse Power.
BHP is horsepower before energy is lost to transmission, shaft etc.

It makes no sense to use BHP in this game, as the engines are on the wheels.

So, HP might as well be used.

Do adding hoverblades limit heigh as motor wheels limit speed?
afaik, no. But if you're up too high hoverblades are only good as a stabilizer. (or if not well balanced, a strong wobble force until you go back down)

How does that work? What's the top height you can reach?
