I can't tell if this game has evolved beyond me, or it has gone in a different/bad direction...

not to be all snobbish about it, but I think the devs have ruined the game a bit with all these updates, I much preferred this game when it was originally released, before it was even on steam.

One thing, tho. What i want to know is if you actually lose blocks on each death, and if i have to actually purchase the blocks in bulk again to replace my losses.
Nope, repairs are free and fully made. There was a phase where repairs had a cost but they took it out in favor of promoting creativity and willingness to keep playing.

I think its gotten moderately better, but mainly because of respawning. The rest of the new mode is now in the category of 'neat but not quite as interesting as before', which makes it more interesting than using smgs but not as much as seeing how often lobby chat complains challenge mode is broked because they don't have enough peoples.

I wish it was changed from shooting at the towers to just area capping.  If you know where to shoot at a tower, you can cap it solo in about 8-10 seconds.  Having one or two people on one side who knows this leads to crazy unbalanced games, as it usually takes inexperienced groups much longer to cap a tower.

It was about area capping before and people would just rush for the base and kill the rest of the team by turning a mostly-even match into a 3-on-12.

Yeah, that past game mode was pretty bad too.  You could be the hero on the team and kill half their bots, then die and never know the outcome (I think you're awarded more credits later if your team did win, but you had to pay attention to your credits).  I'm fine with capping the home base tower by shooting at it, but if the outside fusion towers were area cap only, that'd be awesome.

I'm loving the new game mode, personally.

Also, somewhere along the way during my long break from the game, they rebalanced wheels, so my tank barely worked anymore. Made a new one with tracks, and I'm loving it.

So I just built myself a chopper of ownage, that zips around the map and rains death from above. Very much liking the rotorblades, though I kinda miss my zepplin that I used to fly.

I agree that the spawning makes everything better.

The way it worked, the game punished dying while killing nearly the whole opposition, but rewarding hiding at the back and being the last bot standing.

I've managed to do that with a rail tank, and the guy just kept shouting into everyone chat until he respawned.

Alright, moving into T3 with my SMG gunbed cruiser 'Remove Kebot'.

Our armament is down to 6 T3 SMGs (Having more than six is a big help because redundancy). I've added in radar, and will add additional radar jammers when I get them unlocked for dat tactical advantage. In general, armor is getting thicker due to addition of electroplates. Overall, I realized my CPU was being wasted adding redundant guns that I'd have to eliminate anyway due to T3+ smgs having bigger firing arcs.

The current strategy of trying to make the front of the cruiser heavily armored, overtiering my guns and smashing through waves of bots without resistance has carried me rapidly through tiers 1-2, but I don't know how well it'll hold up now that more people will deploy plasma/railguns to burst damage me to death. 

Going forward; going to try to electroplate my bot more heavily, or failing that just layer armor. My wheels are going to have to get moved up a tier or so when possible (I haven't upgraded from tier 1 yet due to having basically no RP) and I might have to add thrusters as well if the added weight makes me slower than an SMG cruiser should be.
