addendum: here is a detail on how I attach smg to the chassis, note how the armor from the front is not connected, so a front shot doesn't pop the smg

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
(I removed a couple cubes to show the inside)

here is an 'smg magnet' that dissipates the first shots directed toward one of my rail pillars on my rail spider:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

see how it is not attached directly but goes on a convoluted path before connecting to the chassis? that is where the first rail damage goes, removing nothing essential.

those details make it so I can easily surprise a enemy rail in a 1vs1 match by not dying. (a similar magnet catches rail shots on side pillars, rear pillars I didn't had space so it only protect from a smg shot)

None of the wheels are directly connected to the tiles supporting the seat, there's a full 2-thick wall of blue between the cockpit and the space with the jammer+radar in the back, and the whole cockpit block is basically a solid mass of orange+blue with internal wedges for extra support everywhere they fit. That's my main concern, though I tend to stay away from brawls, so I'm usually only taking damage on the front quarter. I have considered switching up to T4 shields covering the wheels to block shots on the middle pairs, but I'm not sure if it's worth further extending the base of the chassis to properly support them.

well since it's a tank, probably no sense in making it bigger and with more rails, however, consider putting a skirt around your rail front so that first shot will land on cubes and not on the pillar sustaining the weapon
That's what those flat shields are there for; I don't really have the space or CPU to set up proper damage blocking.

e: Thanks much for the first screenshot, I'd been wondering about structures like that.

Basically the way I've had it break down so far is that I'm only eating other railgun shots/long range inaccurate plasma fire, and then only on the front. Usually what happens is either I back off before the shields break completely, though there was one match where the weaker shields on the wheels went down and I lost the front pair.

tl;dr I've avoided issues with the weak rear because I'm a camping bastard.

This guy knows what's up.  Once you learn how damage propagates you can build relatively weak bots that can survive a lot of abuse.

Oh dear, I just squeezed my way into tier 9, and its no longer a baloon popping fest :( Now everyone doesn't die on the first rail hit, and are MUCH more durable. Even fliers can take lots of abuse.

Well, time to grind those T10 rails.

Okay, took a lot of that into account, and with more CPU and cash I was able to make some improvements. (The orange wedges at the front corners of the chassis are flipped around to gap between them and the blocks supporting the T3 shields now).

Is it me, or do the blocks below the frontmost rail look terribly out of proportion?

It's probably the perspective. If you're talking about the orange/blue front of the chassis, it's definitely the perspective; that front row of orange wedges is on the same z-level as the flat orange/blue surface.

No, I'm talking about the pink blocks.
They also seem to be clipping into each other... o.0

PPE: Oh, that's just another triangle block. XD

Anyways, seems decent, though I'd add another "strut" under the rail arm in case you get hit from above.

Yeah, there doesn't appear to be anything intrinsically wrong with it.  The only thing I'd say is to make the front more triforce because if anyone manages to rush you then protecting your guns a bit with more robust armor would be a decent plan.  And to pull the guns in a bit so you can do multiple connections to the gun's attach block.

With rails, I generally try to make them as close together as possible.  On a plate of max tier armor, you're unlikely to get any splash damage hitting multiple gun attach blocks, and the less parallax with aim is a boost.  I would also put my rails either on level, or with a lip in front of them.  It sacrifices a bit of gun depression, but I mostly shot fliers and the added protection from SMG tanks was worth the lower pivot range.

Basically I built a brick and then put rails on the top of it.

Yeah, I agree on both the point of adding support struts and moving the third one onto level. I can't really do a viable brick right now, as I'm at 666/666 CPU.

Yeah, a good brick will consume literally all your CPU.  I opted for blocks instead of electroplates, which adds some bulk, but it's still brutal.  I'd still suggest everyone have one hangar with a good brick though - even white blocks and T1 wheels (which are free) are really impressive at sheer number of blocks.  Especially once you start triforcing and covering your vulnerable bits.

Your build demonstrates a lot more technical skill than I have, but it still looks to me like you could use some better shielding on the front, which isn't really possible until you get those T5 shields. Tomorrow if I have time I'll post my current build, which is almost due for a rebuild.

Check out this thread. It has a nice little hover which is quite cheap and could scale tiers 7-10

Hey guys, you finalyl convinced me to redownload this. After getting through the login and getting all my stuff, I've come up with this nifty tier 2 railbuggy that can apparently climb hills like a mountain goat:
