28th Sandstone, 37Meg Helmet breached the walls. As soon as the wall crumbled I enacted the new burrow restrictions, calling our dwarves up. She was the last one coming up, and pulled the lever to close the bridge on her way out. I wanted to make sure we had time to set the other bridges. Unfortunately the design required at least on path to the fortress remain open to enact the breach.
Run!!!
That done, Ringo and Meg activated the grinder after closing the access bridges.
Open the Gate!
Release the carts!
13th Timber, 37We have been waiting, but neither the undead nor the demons have been lured into the grinder. I am at a loss. We have left them a simple, if devious, route into our fortress, but none are trying to enter.
A lonely louse man corpse…
16th TimberSince the undead seem to have no interest in our fortress, I have taken the step of closing the path to the fortress, but leaving the livestock bait in place and letting the grinder run, in case any venture upwards. In the meantime, I shall open up exploratory mining again to find more gold, Armok willing, and begin planning of a grinder above ground to deal with invaders. The human still sit out side, but I may be able to begin a system that future overseers can use to deal with less cautions foes.
20th Timber, 37The humans have finally left! I have opened the gate. We will gather what we can while completing the outer wall.
24th Timber, 37I went to check on the grinder. It appears a louse man wandered in, as I found at least three parts of one on the tracks. It appears our defenses are working.
28th Timber, 37A warlock ambush has appeared outside. The walls are done, but the bridges will have to wait. We will continue work on the upper grinder, and sell off another batch of platinum bars for more gold sovereigns.
What stupid hats…
27th Moonstone, 37Yet another beast has entered the caverns. A shell covered blob of ash. I do not even know how we would begin attacking such a creature.
Ugh.
Good news, however. Our experience building the first grinder, combined with the new grinder being located in easy to dig soil, allowed us to create the new upper grinder in record time. Construction and testing are complete. Once the warlocks leave and we can secure the bridges above we need only dig out an access tunnel from the surface to lure victims in.
4th Opal, 37It appears a python woman corpse gummed up the grinder. We will clear it out and get the machine running again. There are more bodies on the tracks, so it does seem that some of our friends from below are meeting our welcome mat.
9th Opal, 37On a whim, I went back to the walls to look for the warlocks. They are still here, off the to the east. They seem to be chasing kit moleweasles around. What stupid, pointless creatures. I am referring to both.
17th Opal, 37While our exploratory mining is showing little, we do have almost 20000 sovereigns. I am going to summon two more dwarves.
7th Obsidian, 37Old Ark Withdraws, and creates a quern.
9th Obsidian, 37It seems the Warlocks goaded some monkeys inside our wall. The critters freed a plump helmet man, who was dressed like an Apostle of Armok, of all things. The warlocks had a grand time bludgeoning him to death while using him for spell-casting practice.
He’s just a mushroom, guys…
12th Obsidian, 37A drow caravan appeared on the horizon, but upon survey the walls, the pointy hat of the warlocks and the piles of broken wagons, dead bodies and scattered trade goods, they set up camp well away from our walls. Probably wise of them.
We finished clearing out the grinder, and restarted the mechanism. All of the bits were thrown into a small room one floor below the killing floor. Mc Muzz gleefully took an inventory of the remains:
19th Obsidian, 37
The warlocks started a fire to the south of the fortress, and then left after tiring of beating up a kit moleweasle. They truly are imbeciles.
That seems a bit much…
Seriously?
Oh, come on…
No words…
/facepalm
I opened the gates. I tried to wave at the camp of drow. They did seem to notice. Well, they may have seen a shape flaining against a backdrop of smoke, and thought I was burning to death. Either way, they are coming towards the gates now. I’ve also ordered the bridges to be linked to levers by the main gate.
22nd Obsidian, 37While McMuzz, Meg and Stormhelmet worked at the bridge mechanisms I meet with the Drow trade representative. I asked everyone else to hual up whatever they though might trade. Since we have so much food and drink, I asked the dark elves bring those giant spiders of theirs. If we can get a few of those, we might be able to harvest their silk when at peace and unleash them on our foes when at war. We already have piles of bloodsteel armor and weapons from previous drow caravans, but these traders do not seem to mind.
26th Obsidian, 37Well, the drow had very little on them, so I took it all. Armok knows we have enough crap lying around here. Hopefully the drow will send another caravan next winter, and we can start making contact with the outside world again. At the least they might be a distraction for all the sieges we get around here.
And with that, I step down. I hope the next overseer finds these infernal machines useful, and keeps us safe another year.
