Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Egg

Basically, I embarked with thirty or so assorted birds, intending on eggs being my main staple. Come year two, after ignoring various "keets have hatched" "ducklings have hatched" "chicks have hatched" "turkeys have hatched" "poults have hatched" "peachicks have hatched", I discover that my food stockpile is absolutely empty. My dwarves have been living from the meager crops that I've been planting. I then notice that I have a hoard of birds. The dwarf:bird ratio is 1:10. I do not have a dwarven stronghold, but a subterranean avian compound.

It took me a long time to figure out why I had so many birds and why the eggs weren't being collected, so I wrote up a post here intending to ask if there was some sort of arcane option that disabled all egg collection, I then discovered that my food stockpile had been set to "accept from links only".

Moral of the story: Don't accidentally hit 'a' when you're fiddling with your stockpile.

on the positive side, you had a lot of bird meat now... once they grow up some, that is.

I was going to say 'if you've got the size bug sorted', but with that many birds you should be fine.

I made alpaca wool really valuable (to encourage the production of home-made well-dyed cloth), and lost track of the population until they started to impact FPS. So. Much. Meat.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.
