I'm guessing that your armor layout is based on the info on the Masterwork Wiki page, which is out of date.
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Masterwork:Armor

As I recall, all clothing and padded items are UNDER with LAYER_SIZE:10
All mail items are OVER with LAYER_SIZE:15
All Armor items are ARMOR with LAYER_SIZE:25 and are [SHAPED]
All of these items have a LAYER_PERMIT:49 (ok, I saw SHIRT still has 50)
Cover items are unmodified from defaults.

So you could do 3 padded, a mail, and then an armor for each body zone.

Can't say I've ever bothered to fully load out anyone, since I quickly get steeloaks and trade for mithril, so I'm going for Volcanic before the third year when things start to get exciting.  I have loaded each layer in the past, but since mithril blocks everything, I generally just do armor and skip mail and padded.

Give a dwarf a fish, you feed him for a season.
Give a dwarf a Fishpond, couple of buckets, build a Fishery, and enable Fishfarming labor; you feed him for a lifetime. (And get someone to clean and prep the fish)

Hmm, no - I took my info from the DF manual, but I guess it's the same source as the DF wiki.

I'll check the raws.

However, I just "prospect all"-ed the site for the first time (I didn't look at the z-layers, just wanted to know whether a metal is there or not) and there's no silver. So i wouldn't be able to create a lot of mithril. (unless I am missing some new features of MDF, in which case please let me know - I feel I am underutilizing the mod, since I haven't played since v1)

The year of Armok 203, 3rd year since the foundation of Bertaran, The Landcarpshark

We start the year in a good mood. We are slowly and steadily building every single workshop that dwarves can build, even if we don't have a specific purpose in mind.

5th Slanite:

Err, what?

10th Slanite

With a grand pomp and cerimony, Dr. Shultz is the first dwarf to make use of the newly contructed Guildhall, shortly followed by a now former bone-carver. If the last year's epidemics and warpstone sickness have shown anything, it's that we need a highly functional hospital. For this purpose, we set our two healers to give each other shifts and costantly train in the apothecary. They set out on this grisly work, practically going through all the corpses and remains that our macabre leader Meph stores instead of throwing at the volcano. Well, can't deny the efficiency: they were already at a good skill stage, but within half an year they hit legendary status in both Diagnosis and Wound Dressing. You can't train the best soldiers in the world without stitching the occasional cut, right?

Oh, and we also realize we have a third Guardian of Armok strutting around...I think these guys come with the new migrants.

But, in a surprising move, Meph has sent a missive to the King asking not to send any further migrants. The surrouding areas are becoming dangerous: warlocks, goblins and orcs must have heard of our fortress from their thieves, and we fear that they will ambush the hapless settlers before our military can react. Also, we are going for quality - not quantity. We are 50 dwarves, and we are going to become exemplars of dwarven skills. If we need some migrants that much, we can always summon them through the embassy or even the fabled town portal.

16th Slate

We build weight benches and Morul taverns. Our soldiers start training there instead of sparring

16th Felisite

We get our first ambush: while the drakes are chasing off yet another snatcher, some warlocks lying in the grass spring up and start flinging spells everywhere. We wait and see how the drakes fare. Not sending melee soldiers vs warlocks, will wait for them to try and go past the Guardians of Armok first.

Our poor famed drakes lose in the end. Hmm. Need to retreat the drakes and just leave one in a grated channel so that we can spot snatchers/thieves before they go through the traps.

Warlocks are lingering out. Our military is raring to go, but we hold them back: armor is of no use against magic...for now. Eventually most warlocks either get out of them map, or run into our traps - those who are not killed by the 200 stone spear in 20 weapon traps have to throw themselves into the nearby moat - with no way out. We just put down the bridge on them so they can't scare our civilians. We'll figure out what to do with them later.

One warlock is still milling around so we finally give the assault order. A legionnaire gets there first...and the fool warlock, instead of defending himself, attacks the baby. Hmm...baby armor, 50% protection chance. That's an idea.

Pirate Mosey is a proud mother of twins. They refuse milk and reach for the rum bottles.

The accumulated results of the last two years on our hospital. Barf, ichor, blood all over. Not sure what the warlock blood is doing there:

12th Sandstone

After an year of intense prayers, we get a high priest of Armok! We leave him free to roam around and assess the trustworthyness of our dwarfs, and no one is found lacking. Good.

25th Sandstone.

Err...not sure what happened.

That there is Dr. Shultz. I have no clue what he was doing outside  :(
He has all hauling tasks disabled, and there's no water outside. We mourn his passing and we are doing to one doctor. Hope he is enough for now.

By the end of the year, we have excavated and smelted unholy amount of copper, tin and iron - bearing rocks. Our fairly unskilled smith guild apprentice produced so many copper gauntlets (that we sold) that he became a legendary armorsmith in no time. Now we are doing the same treatment for weapons. By the time we have steel, he'll be ready to craft masterfully done weapons and armors...and melt whatever is not mastercrafted. We can't waste still on sub-par equipment. We are also tunneling down to the magma sea, hoping to spot some holy Adamantine.

We also buy a lot of medicine plants, all ending in -ium. We are not sure what exactly to do with them, to be honest.

Also, we do a lot of researching and inventions - we are in the process of crafting the magma weaponries, armories and rune furnaces, as well as the magma -blast furnace, -metallurgist furnace and -crucible. We are in a good shape, if a bit slowly. And it's good, because our Guardians of Armok took a beating from some Orcs. Nasty beasts, those.

Here are the named dorfs. Sorry about Dr. Shultz.

We have one Legionnaire with ludicrous physical attributes due to two years of weight bench training.
Unfortunately, everyone's weapons skills is still fairly low and I won't risk them in combat until they have steel equipment.
Also, I am going to stay at 50 dwarfs for now, as a challenge.

So... Pirate Mosey is going to fight with two babies in her both arms.

This is why I don't draft females into military. I appologize for the blatant sexism, but seriously guys.

I think the fort just got destroyed by some sort of loyalty cascade  :( :( :(

Basically a child went schizophrenic, I had it killed by my soldiers and now everyone is running around interrupting each other. My legionnaire is just butchering people with his bloodsteel crescent glaive.

Is there any possible way to salvage this situation?

After it started? Not really. Medication for the schizo before, or stationing warbeasts at him (they dont start cascades), or walling off parts of the fort, waiting for all renegade civ-members to die... thats about it. Or savescum.

Does this loyalty cascade happen everytime a schizophrenic is killed? Or was this a rare case?

The Legionnaire was struck down after accumulating 10-12 kills (boy, a bloodsteel crescent glaive is scary) by a miner...fairly spectacularly, i might add. But I think the fort is gone, half of the people are tantruming and I didn't really build it with the idea of walling separate sections (a central staircase covers all).

Shame, I just got adamantine and patternwelded mithril.

edit: Actually...after the death of the Legionnaire, the situation seems to be back to normal. I only lost 6-7 dorfs, and a few are throwing tantrums now...but I should survive.

The year of Armok 204, 4rd year since the foundation of Bertaran, The Landcarpshark

Oh boy. What a nightmarish year. I am not good at this game.

Honestly, the only reason this fortress is still standing? This guy:

Due to this skillset:

And abundant supply of medical resources bought through caravans. I think that by now 90% of the fortress population have gone through his hands.

Anyway.

The year starts in a good enough way. The metal industry is making headways - we are making steel, transforming it into mithril (the real bottleneck is silver, we don't have much galena), and when possible, into welded mithril. Also, we mined down to the magma sea and got some 10 boulders of holy adamantine (praise the miners - those who survived anyway. We lost of a few of them through magma burning).

Unfortunately that's where the problems started. No, we didn't dig too deep.

One of our children (we are starting to have a lot of them, relative to the fotress population, after Meph's ban on immigrants) went insane and started attacking people. With heavy heart, we sent our squad to put him down. Our Legionnaire - the Smith's wife, arrived and lopped his head with her bloodsteel crescent glaive. That's where everyone went insane. Apparently, most people did not know of the childs' disease, and everyone thought our military was trying to make a military coup. In the intense scuffle that followed, the Legionnaire was just cutting down people like grass. She started with poor DoomOnion and proved that magic abilities against the undead are of no use when you have an angry Legionaaire with a weapon that is better than your armor. Goodbye DoomOnion :(

She then killed 5-6 civilians them before one of our legendary miners came out of the mineshafts, and this is what happened:

From then one, he did a swift and efficient job:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Unfortunately, by now the damage was done. People had lost spouses, lovers, children and friends. Some went insane:

And some simply expressed their anger by tantruming (like Meph).

Our legendary smith, to commemorate his wife's passing, created an incredible piece of armor:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I guess he didn't want to depict his wife's passing, so he chose to honor the drakes that defended us in our early years instead.

After a period of relative calm, all hell broke lose - again. For some reason, our dwarves just keep wandering outside when they have no job - and in the space of 2 months, they sprung 3-4 warlock ambushes. Our entrance got painted with blood, and vomit, during the scuffle between the militia, aided by guardians of armok, and the warlocks. At one point, some warlocks even reached the beast breeding ground, but the horde of drakes was quickly on them. The end result though was that we lost multiple foolish civilians...and oh god there is vomit, vomit everywhere in the fortress. We got so fed up that of idiotic civilizans wandering outside that Meph ordered the drawbridge raised. We will only lower it when diplomats are trying to get in.

SharpKris was suffering from torn nerves from these battles that our Doctor did not know how to cure. We sent him to the magical healing Morul Tavern.

In the meanwhile, we had kept purchasing medical supplies and steel/mithril crates from all the caravans (human, dwarven, drow) that came. It was easy to afford them - our chef is the best cook in the world, we believe.

Oldark also created an artifact, which pictured the artifact created by the armorsmith
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Towards the end of the year, we got recognition from the mountainhomes. Even though we were standing at just 50 dwarves of population, the quality of our dwarfs was so high that the King decided to make us a Barony. Meph gratiously accepted the responsibility
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

To commemorate this, we eagerly waited for the drow caravan to arrive. Last year we had placed some very expensive orders, and we followed up by purchasing...well a lot.

Giant Jaguars, Cave Crocs and ...Marbled Angiswaerd...? What are these? I don't know, but they sounded cool.

We have used our most precious metals (adamantine and welded mithril) to make battle axes. We are using mithril to make armor, but it won't be enough - so I we will also use steel.

End of year comes...let me show you the sorry state of this fort:

Entrance. Barf, blood and ichor.

First level. See how everything is green? That's barf.

Also, any suggestions, tips and ideas are warmly welcome

I think you should try to clean your fort.
So the challenge:
- Get some waterlings
- create an effective drainpattern
- start waterlings at the top of the fortress
- clean fortress that way
- get fortress dry again

Good luck.
Oh, and I would take some random militia dwarf ^^

About the adamantine. did you check the levels above/below? There may be more outlying pieces ,)

Heh, so a Witch Hunter, a Pirate, and a German-accented Doctor walk into a bar...

Did you know, when you're done creating the LANDSHARK, you can actually use DFHack to turn him/her/it into an adventurer! :D

It's true!

You still got pieces of candy left to mine. the hollow part is always 2x2, and the screenshot doesnt show enough space for that in it.
