Not so much these days, but back in the day I used to get so immersed in Silent Hunter 3. I have memories of being under depth charge attack and sitting in the command room waiting for my hydrophone operator to whisper "Depth charges in the water" then hoping they don't hit us.

Unreal: One of a few games I really got sucked into and felt like part of a vast world. Not to mention, all the freaking walking.

Probably dwarf fortress. I rarely get immersed in narratives or stories in games, but what really does get my giblies rustled is a good wiki game. I had a lot more fun poring over the wiki and forum than I did playing it (though I still do play it occasionally), just learning about its mechanics and adding new stuff.

Another would probably be TF2, but again, not because of the 'story' or setting. TF2 really helped me articulate internally what it is about an FPS that is good or bad, and it was really fun getting immersed in its mechanics and design decisions (many of which I disagree with as a result).

Oddly, Ace Attorney. It's one of the only games that got me.

The older Ultimas weren't bad. Wind directions, phases of the moon, day/night cycles and weather. The story might have revolved around you, but at least other people went about their business regardless of what you were up to. Can't find someone? Go to the pub. Or their house. Make a note to ransack their house later, when they're at work. Eighths smeighths.

Yeah. Ultima 7 in particular has more detailed routines for its citizens, as well as interactions with objects, than you will find in say Skyrim for example, and that game was released over twenty years ago. Besthesda is starting to catch up in that department, but I think the shift from 2D to 3D meant a different kind of realism became extremely hard to implement for quite a long time.

I'm making a game called "Innkeep!", where you run an inn set in a low-fantasy world and try to lighten your guests pockets. Forum topic here.

I got immersed in minecraft. Too much. FAR too much.

As in 'not realising I need to piss, crap and eat' immersed. When I finally did come off, I generally needed the loo VERY desperately.
Seconded.

Wow! Looks like it took off after all.

I'll have to agree with the Thief series, definitely. Don't know why I didn't think of it in the OP.

A lot of these honestly surprised me, too. Like Minecraft and Ultima, though Ultima was kind of before my time, so I don't think I ever got very into it.

I also have to agree with E.Y.E. At first I was like "Really?" but then I sat down and thought about it. It's a very immersive world, all things told.
