Double Post, Mea Culpa.
I found an anime on Netflix recently. I had noticed it's name, and it was familiar to me. So I've been watching it, and it's quite enjoyable. So I wanted to share the reason I knew it's name.
The anime is Death Note. When I was a mafia player in Giant In the Playground Games, I saw a very popular series there (equivalent to the Supernatural or Paranormal series here) called Death Note. I never played, but I think I recall the gist of the rules, and if their archive isn't gone I can look them up.
Mafia games ever ran. Rules are in the spoiler:
The premise is that there is one player, The Kira, who is killing people for spoilerish reasons. If spoiler quotes worked, I'd use them, but I'll just use transparent text: He's killing evil to bring in a new world. There's a prodigy investigator, known only as L, who brings together a group of people, including everyone he suspects of being the Kira. He announces to the group his plans to hunt the Kira through anonymous means.
Most players are either survivors or win when Kira is killed. There are a couple of Kira supporters, but Kira himself has a unique goal and mechanism. He has a night kill, but can only use it if he knows the "real name" (known only to the player) and "Alias" (their username) of a player. In addition, he can set conditions on the kill, such as "it happens later", or "he investigates so and so right before dying and accuses them of being the Kira". If the conditions cannot happen but the real name matches the alias, they just die right away. He can also investigate a player to learn their role, with a chance of also learning their name.
Kira's followers have special abilities. One has a roleblock, and two others have shinigami eyes; they can learn the name of a target each night. That's a scum team of four people. We could remove one of the ones with eyes if there's not enough players on Bay12. Kira's Goal is to eliminate all criminals, L, and certain investigators.
The investigators are L, who has an investigation; he learns the role of someone. However, he sees the Kira as innocent. As does the "Near" player, L's second best investigator; Near gets an investigation once per three nights, unless L dies, in which case Near can investigate every night. Then there's "Mello", thinks he's better than Near and is better, who can investigate once per three nights (same flaw, sees the Kira as innocent), learns the role AND name of a player; and he has a nightly "steal" attempt. If he hits the Kira with the steal, Kira loses his kill, and Mello gains the kill. L and Near both just have the win condition of killing Kira and supporters. Mello has the condition of killing Kira, supporters, and Near (he's the jealous type).
Criminals are survivors who block Kira's win. The NPA are a group of Masons (town players who share a quickchat and are confirmed town), and win with L and Near. You have Anti-Kira citizens, who also win with L and Near, when the Kira supporters are killed, and Pro-Kira citizens, who don't count as Kira supporters, don't count against Kira, and are survivors. There are two Anti-Kira players with roleblocks, although they can use their roleblocks to block the next day's vote instead of the night action if they choose.
There may be a third party (Yeah, those survivors don't count as third parties), a group of 3 players with another Death Note. Only one of them has powers, however, and he has both the death note and eyes (he always gets the name when investigating, unlike Kira). And there may be more abilities or restrictions to a role than is public knowledge.
The day lynch works using just the Alias. "Real name" does not need to be known. The real names are supplied by the moderator and are not the player's real names.
Finally, if you get a moderator PM that tells you to take specific actions, they will usually say something like "don't tell anyone you received this PM, do not tell anyone you will die. You must do...", and will include directions from the person who wrote their name in the Death Note. Yes, the Death note can set Post Restrictions (only if the person to be killed will be killed at a later time). It's mandatory not to act as if anything is unusual beyond the directions in the note, though.
And that about covers it.
TL;DR:
Lots of investigative roles and decoy warm bodies.
Roleblocks can block votes instead, multiple roleblocks.
Cannot kill at night unless a second name is known.
Vote manipulation in the form of roleblocks and delayed death.
The kill doesn't have to happen when the target is chosen. Can set post restrictions on kill target.
