Cage should be perfectly fine.

OMG. Magmaproof cage + Magmaling + Invaders = Most Epic Magmalandmine.

This should be... interesting to test.  I assume that the cage will fill with magma, which will appear when the cage is deconstructed?

No, the magma should spawn 1 tile above the cage.

I can't really capture the effect with still images, but the border between the 1-2 depth and the 3-4 depth has an interesting effect.  Bascially, there is this rippling border of shadow between them.  The magma one layer down is giving off light.  The magma above it conceals that light.

The section to the south contains the glassworks.  East and west wings are ore processing.  North-west is armorworks, north-east is weaponsworks.

Can you turn rendermax on and off while between plays? Or is it one of those things that requires a worldgen?

Can turn it on and off.
Need to set to standard print mode, which does require you to restart the DF process

About magmalings in cages: The code for slayrace (which is the script that is used to make magmalings spawn magma) specifically skips caged or chained creatures.

I just discovered this yesterday when I was doing some research about the possibility of a toggle-able liquid spawn script.
