Project Potentia ad Populis
« on: December 30, 2013, 04:00:35 pm »

Hello everyone,
This is a game that I have been working on while learning to code. Unfortunately my skills are pretty limited, so it's nothing that will blow your mind.
But rather than putting it on a shelf to collect dust, I thought I'd put it up here, maybe someone actually enjoys playing it.

"PPP aspires to be a kingdom simulator with city management aspects. The main resource towards building a strong kingdom will be...
having the right subjects to get the job done! Hence the name of this game. The current state is alpha, with bugs and unbalances to
be expected."

***Current game features:***
 -Procedural world generation
 -Production chains
 -Trade
 -City buildings
 -Worldmap buildings
-Nobles (characters) with improvable stats and skills
 -Armies, conquest and sieges
-Diplomatic missions (very few options yet)

If you like only fully functional games don't try this one out.
But if you like to have fun experimenting give it a go!
And write some feedback.

I don't want to sound rude, but apparently advertising (for lack of a better word) one's games in this section is kind of frowned upon. (paradoxically)

You might want to move this to the Creative Projects section (IIRC there's a Move button somewhere at the bottom of the page, but I could be wrong, I never needed to move me threads).

As for the game itself, looks fairly okay, at least that's my first impression from reading this and from the screenshots. I'll give it a go.

To be fair, this guy was registered years ago and has posted some.

The real objections stem from random people coming to advertise their game. As a Bay12er, it's s'alright.

I've seen many threads made by authors. It's frowned upon to simply sign up and advertise as your first post, but going through his profile clearly shows that he didn't sign up just for this.

Certanly sounds and looks interesting. But I really have a strong dislike for the buttons. The font of the text is too large on certain buttons, and the black on grey and the texture makes it really hard to read.

Ah, I've got something wrong then. I always do. Apologies.
F*ck my memory.

I think the "rule" against self-advertisement people try to push is ridiculous, and it's always disappointing to see it crop up immediately with these threads. Most people seem to come to the Other Games section to find/share new games and discuss gaming in general, and that's precisely what this is... he's not even selling anything! And even if he were, you're still learning about a game you probably hadn't heard of before, and may really like.

This game does look quite interesting, definitely giving it a bash when I get back from the holidays.

I am playing the game right now. I've only built a logging camp and a clay pit, but the thing is I have no idea what these improvement really mean because I can't see their production number.
I can't see how much I get from taxation either. Either I haven't noticed something, or it really needs a production screen.

Can people just quit whining about promotion here when it is not intrusive and such a perfect fit for niche interests?

It's infinitely more annoying and the only purpose it serves is to make the poster look a bit dickish.  There are moderators here.  Let the moderators moderate moderately and just shut up already.  I like finding out about more management strategy sims.  What the hell is wrong with someone promoting their own work?  That is the essence and lifes blood of the DIY indie scene, whether it be games, movies, art, music, anything.

It's the robots advertising candy crush saga Candy Crush SagCANDYCRUSHCANDYCRUSHCANDYCRUSHCRRUUUUUUUUUUUUUSH that need to be dealt with.  And the moderators deal with them efficiently.

-edit-
And true to form, the promoter here has been a part of the community for years longer than the whiner.

Thing is, the ones that post their ad then never come back probably won't see the posts telling them not to do that.  The ones that do come back usually apologise, and then everyone gets back to asking questions about the game, posting to watch, or otherwise expressing their interest.  In either case nothing much is accomplished by mentioning the 'rule'.

On the other hand it's usually only one or two short (usually polite) reminder posts, rarely does anyone make a big deal about the breach of etiquette.

On that note, can we talk about the guy's game instead of continuing on the angry circle jerk someone complained about then reinforced?

Like the big deal that podger is making out of something that was already mea culpa'd by DarkDXZ before he even posted?

On that note, can we talk about the guy's game instead of continuing on the angry circle jerk someone complained about then reinforced?

Indeed.

I have not the time to DL and give it a spin, but the screenshot shows one bit of advice...  The buttons: they'd work better as white text on grey.  Black text on grey isn't enough contrast for high readability.

Good luck making your thing, pedrito!  :)

Slightly off topic...but how did you learn to prcedually generate a world...and do you have any tutorials/books/etc that helped? I am having trouble wrapping my head around it...that aside...

I will give this a spin when I get off work!
