Heroine's Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok - freeware Adventure/RPG
« on: December 30, 2013, 07:38:34 am »

Here's a neat thing I've recently come across - a Quest for Glory like Adventure game with RPG elements, set in Norse mythology. To anyone unfamiliar with the QfG series, that means an Adventure game with upgradeable stats, multiple solutions to puzzles (usually one for each of the archetypes - fighter/mage/thief) and a combat system.

Quote
Heroine's Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok is an adventure / RPG hybrid. Like in many adventure games, you have a world to save, and must use your wit, guile and inventory to puzzle your way through. Like in many roleplaying games, you can customize your character with various classes and skills, and must train yourself in combat to stand a chance against the fierce monsters in your way.

The game is designed in the spirit and atmosphere of the classics, and strives to have the same high quality of art, music, and plot. With multiple character classes and several solutions to many puzzles, the game will have excellent replayability.

It seems more than "QFG-like." It seems to be a direct clone with re-written dialogs and screens. Not that that's a bad thing. But it's not just similar. That's QFG 2.0's combat screen and I can clearly see the Spielburg inspiration of the city. I may have to give this a whirl to see how much of an original project it is.

Uh, its a different game entirely.  The combat screen looks similar, and the art style has that 90s Kings Quest vibe, yes, but that's like saying that every RTS ever is the same game as Warcraft: Orcs and Humans.

Well Quest for Glory was also a RPG/Adventure hybrid and had lots of combat looting (mostly silver and reagents for the healer... to sell for more silver) ETC. altho there weren't too many items usable outside of puzzles... at least not before QFG 5 that varied the things a little bit.
The inspirations are clearly visible but that's not a bad thing. It's a VERY good thing in fact.

Right, exactly.  It's clearly an original work in the same way that Pynchon's novels are original works even though Chaucer used pages first.

No.
I think you mean deadly rooms of death.
But still no, as far as I can tell.

Oh shoot, my bad. I just saw the DROD game subforums on the same forum as theirs and assumed it's cause they're the same people, but apparently their forum is just hosted as a subforum on the DROD game creators' forums. :V

I like this so far, seems to be a good QFG-like game.
I nearly died of frostbite, and should probably find a way to solve that issue soon.
