Founding the dwarven civilization (dwarfless world-gen)
« on: December 30, 2013, 04:33:09 am »

I would like to play a scenario where there are no dwarves in the world except of those created (by Armok) upon embark.
Searching the forums I only found some very old posts that probably are not valid any more. Looking at the files in the init folder didn't help either.
The civ-related parameters affect all races equally, don't they?

Is there a way to generate a world without any initial dwarven civilization?

If so, how many dwarves will I get after embark, given that the hard-coded migration waves would still arrive even without any civilzation in the background?

If there's no dwarf civ, you can't play dwarf mode.

What if the civ goes extinct? Can't I get all dwarves to die (preferably very early) and then replace them by new ones through embark?

You can get worlds where the dwarf civ did exist at one point, but went extinct, and you are able to play fort mode. However, I'm not sure what the exact requirements for this happening is. I do know that you will get the first two hardcoded migrant waves, though.

Mod dwarves life span to last about a year, then change that on embark.

I tried that and dwarfs died at age 2 but new dwarves were born every year.
Can this be prevented somehow?

You could always gen a world with a climate the dwarves have no chance of surviving world gen in. I did that with a waterless Dune-like world. Odds were very against the dwarves in that situation and only one of the six dwarven civs survived world gen in the one I did.
You could also mod in a race that utterly trounces dwarves and have them spawn in the same biomes, but then you'd have to deal with that race in fort mode.

Change dwarves to be only male, or female, and change that on embark. THis one should work!

Ah, but what if some of them manage to become immortal killing machines and survive?

Then they'll be necromancers. Just make the world last longer than 160 years and it should be fine.

you need to change the max age in the raws in the save file, I'm guessing you only edited the main raws, which are only used for a new world gen

Making all dwarves male did prevent any dwarven civilization.
But then I was not able to play dwarf mode any more...

Maybe Putnam was right all the time...

You can make the dwarven civ extinct pretty easily, here's an example for vanilla 34.11.
You'll get all the dwarves you need, no restrictions.  The entire game plays as normal.

I don't believe it's necessary to mod the dwarves. I beleive there is a parameter setting in the advanced world gen that allows you to play even when there is no playable civilization. Just put the civilization cap on 1 or 2 (to get some goblins or treehuggers) and turn playable civ required off. I think that should work.
