the "declare war" reaction actually just runs the "forcesiege" command in dfhack^^ (which is different from "force siege" because it checks the siege requirements^^)

so you can declare war over and over again^^

but beware, the sieges seem to get bigger everytime, so dont underestimate this or be ready for tons of !!FUN!!

also i still wonder about the poisoned weapons... i'm really sure you can also do the named weapons... >.>
gotta test it later...

oh, and a zweihander sounds really nice... just gotta hope i dont get hit from some stray arrow :D

niceabout the sieges, will probably try that :D
about the poisons:
For now i had 4 soldiers dropping their weapons, and basically almost every other not equipped weapon was designated for melting/forbidden
The toxicologist immediately grabbed the one not named weapon, and since that is now having fun poisoning my picks... but hasn't touched a single named weapon yet(neither of the 3 dropped ones, nor of the dozen ones lying around). As i can not dump named items, and i seriously don't feel like fiddling around with my QSP to get the named ones out of it, it looks like the toxicologist is ignoring them... But maybe once he is done with all the picks, he will take the named ones... I will see.
And stray arrows... Uh... Not sure when was the last time i saw any projectile hurting an armored dwarf ^^ To me it looks ike most dangerous is any kind of stun/web + a headhit by a creature stronger then a drowspiders. As there are about 20 such legendary dwarves, even if one gets critically hit (which hasn't happened in the last year, even with all those enemies, and some odd matchups^^)  the other dwarves are usually jumping in and dodgemoving/hitlocking the enemy off the victim.
Have you try alt+a to specific target item for job ;D

woo! ive got the least amount of kills!  :P
I wonder how many times an enemy has been paralyzed by my aura, and killed by Kamikaze... or the rest of the blood thirsty savages (*sniff* they make me so proud...)

6th Granite
A second forgotten beast has shown up.

And no one will probably care about it as it is trapped in the second cavern. Maybe we should build some stairs for it?

13th Granite
Mosey ordered the militia outside. Was babbling something about shortage of supplies and stuff. Not sure what he meant, we have everything.

21th Granite
Othsal went out of th city to collect some more loot to smelt. But what he found wasn't loot but Orc and Frost giant snatchers/thieves. I ran to Mosey. Was this his work again? When asked, he just nodded „Just asked the Frost giant, why they were so wimpy last time... And when they didn't respond, i sent the same message to the Orcs as well“ ARGH! Well... at least now it was clear, why the militia was sent out... How considerate... Meanwhile Othsal was running for his life, but in best dwarven fashion he took the wrong way and was now running away from the entrance. At least he would spot whoever else was out there... Even though losing a legendary furnace operator would somehow hurt us.

22nd Granite
We spotted a Frost giant ambush, approaching from the other side. With our soldiers already in positions, this couldn't scare us. „We were lacking bifrost“ Mosey grinned.

23rd Granite
Things didn't go as smooth as planned. With one frostgiant being sent fling down the entrance road up the stairs into the barracks, and all soldiers occupied, the giant caused quite a mess when he got conscious again, mauling the constructions workers completing the roof.

After strangling one mason for an eternity (about 10 pages...) it was Tenderroast who finally came to finish off the frost giant.

But the mason wasn't the only on in trouble. Othsal was still out there and now also spotted several automaton ambushes. And this time he was less lucky, being hit by several bullets. A ore processor worker that tried to help him, got also shot in the head and instantly killed. Othsal now being alone and unable to run, didn't last much longer.

24th Granite
Situation got worse. The Automatons cooperate with the Orcs! Several Orc ambushes sprung up, protecting the Automatons shooting from behind. With our fighters scattered around the situation looks a bit more complicated then we had initially thought. And we had also lost 2 legendary workers already.

26th Granite
The battle is over. We killed about 15 Orcs, 10 Frost giants and half a dozen Automatons, when all the remaining attackers fled. While our military again passed combat without any scratches, this time we had civilian losses. The mason had been brought to the hospital and is treated now. He has more then 60 scheduled treatments! (countring entries with „needs xyz“) 2 more workers received injuries from stray bullets and are now taken care of in the hospital, but we expect them back at work soon.

28th Granite
We found about a dozen Automatons, but they were no match for our militia. Still, one of the marked the 1000th death here at Hexxedgarish. Not sure if this is something to celebrate, but it surely shows, that life surely has some... excitement... here.

17th Felsite
A hauler spotted a Goblin ambush and was promptly shot dead. When the militia were rushing out to seek revenge, more goblins joined from the other side. But they immeditatly were fired upon by an elven caravan that showed up. Being busy with each other, our soldiers had enough time to kill the first goblin squad, before they ran back, now killing Goblins and Elves without making any difference.

1st Hematite
And so Spring ended without anything further happening. We had actually lost 3 dwarves during this spring to various ambushes, but somehow it still felt like a calm season. But for how long would this last? Mosey ordered our miners to dig deeper. He was looking for trouble. On the surface, our masons had finished roofing the barracks and the second floor of the hospital, which somehow had been forgotten earlier. Construction on a new building in the towncenter has started. In the hospital our medics have been quite busy. There were still several injured civilians, and Stakud, theguy strangled by the Frost giant earlier had already more then 40 treatments with no end in sight. But he was making it. After hearing many tales comparing dwarven hospitals to torture chambers, I was quite surprised about the skills and care taken of our doctors. Not a single dwarf has yet died in the hospital in all those years.

25th Hematite
I shouldn't have jinxed it.

Stakud died in the hospital today, but at least not because of a lack of attention by the dorctors, but because of an infection. That was probably hard to avoid with all the treatments he had received. No amount of soap and cleanlisness could prevent that.
Meanwhile I overheard how our miners hat struck semimolten rock without telling everyone. Anyway... they now got a new task to map more of that level to figure out if there was a lavasea down there...

1st Malachite
Another mountain titan.

This one could shoot webs. That surely made things a bit more complicated, but what chance would 1 titan have against more then 30 perfectly trained dwarves?

2nd Malachite
The militia looked angry. Angr becuse they were expecting a fight. And while it looked at first, like the mountain titan could withstand the flying axes reasonably well, suddenly it was dead. Just dead... Killed by a single flying axe to the head. And Kubuk, who had thrown the axe, wasn't even the most skilled one. Well... now his kill list had something that made him stand out. Lucky for him, no one would guess later, what kind of pushover that titan was, when he would tell this to his grandchildren...
(this is the entire combatlog of the titan)

16th Malachite
Mosey has send some greetings to the Frost giants again. Bifrost farming time! Let's see how many we can catch this time. Hopefully they do not fly around again. At the same time deep down in the earth our miners are still trying to find some access to the magma sea. It looks like in our first attempt we had managed to get below it somehow. Even many levels higher we were still fidning warm stone. We somehow have to dig into it from above...

27th Malachite
Finally we managed to dig into the magmasea!

Oh and we found 2 adamantine spires. Having heard of the terrors with in those.... We decided to conquer whatever may be in there.

5th Galena
We have struck one of the adamantine spires from above. We considered mining out the Adamantine, but we are not here for treasure. We will dig deeper! But first we will wait for the seasonal attacks above ground.

14th Galena
Humans! And not a caravan but a siege!

All riding grizzlies. This would be fun.
As two of the three armies were quite close to the entrance, and in range of our ranged weaponry, kamikazi ordered a change without delay. Our last successes made the military less careful.
Also we noticed one furnace operator being caught between the 2 human armies, and with both Human groups going for him, there was no hope of survival.

15th Galena
The militia arrived at the scene. By now there were more then 80 invaders. But the Humans were caught out of position. With their bowman on front and their soldiers behind, our dwarves quickly managed to catch the dangerous ranged fighters in melee.

18th Galena
It seems to be the theme of this world, that the mounts of invaders are more dangerous then their riders, but in the end cause no damage, because the riders are unable to convert on their chances. Even though there were plenty of dangerous moments with our kind being stunned right between several humans, none got any injuries from it. After we had killed about 40 Humans/bears the rest turned and ran.

19th Galena
The humans were gone, but there was no rest for our militia as two dozen Automatons showed up.

Several haulers got caught in their bullet fire, but with the soldiers close by, the could all be saved.

1st Limestone
Half the year is over! With the main period for above ground attacks over, we are ready to strike the admanatine and explore whatever may be hidden below there. We already got used to the fact, that whatever may come up from the above ground races would be no challenge for us, so now we have to dig deep. While the militia was busy outside, our masons weren't lazy. They finished already 2 floors of our new center of faith and magic. For now only our altars, temples and shrines have found their new place here, but soon we will add a monastary, some room for the apostles and the fourth floor will be all about magic.

OOC: Im planning on digging stairs straight through the spire to challenge HFS. I will wait for the demons to come to the surface, and then fight them there. I just hope my FPS survives this. Right now i'm at around 35 FPS... Let's see how my computer and the militia handles this.
Oh, and fun fact:

4th Limestone
Due to some unfortunate accident we lost two miners today to a magma breakthrough. Someone had accidentally designed downstairs instead of upstairs causing a flood of the adamantine spire. With the spire being lost, we now have to go for the second one.

8th Limestone
Our miners had just approached the second spire, thinking how to dig down into it, when...

They spotted around 100 demons lingering down there in hell and started running. Running for their lives. Everyone was ordered inside, while the militia prepared for battle. This would be the final test.

9th Limestone
One miner didn't make it. At least his sacrifice allowed the other ones to escape.

Or so we thought. Those frost wraith were incredibly fast and chased down another miner.

10th Limestone
Not even making it entirely up the stairs, a spirit of fire was the first demon slain.

But now we noticed a flaw in our defenses. The bastions weren't roofed. The spirits tried to fly over the fortifications to attack our marksdwarves directly, completely bypassing our melee dwarves.

It looks like the demons hate me. They didn't even bother attacking the dwarves, but only tried to remove the statue of mine in the center of the bastion. They did this successfully, but were punished badly for it by the flying javelins and axes.

OOC: i never noticed it was a statue of me throning above the entrance... :D how awesome ^^

Our guardians of Armok also engaged the enemies coming out of the stair shaft. Being somehow fire resistant they did a good job of binding those demons, while the dwarves from above were continuing to shoot. The melee soldiers were still holding back, as we wanted to prevent some overzealous ones to charge down the shafts. As the grass started burning now, they were actually even retreating further back. More then a dozen demons had already fallen, but more and more were coming up now.

11th Limestone
The situation has worsened dramatically. The bastion has been overrun. We have only one reported loss, Udib, one of our best javelinthrowers, but it is unlikely for the others to last much longer.

Oh no... The city is burning... Demons started fire everywhere. Militia was tasked to engage any demons on sight now. No more holding back, this would be the last stand.

13th Limestone
The situation is completely out of hand. There are fires everywhere. Even though we have killed already about 25 demons, more and more are coming. Kamikazi led a bunch of dwarves to free the entrance, but there were webs and fires everywhere. They didn't stand a chance. We lost our commander, kamikazi, and her companion Tenderroast as well as many others.

(I didnt notice it, and when i looked there, they were all gone... :( sorry Picture is kamikazis corpse, couldnt find tenderroast)

17th Limestone
We lost more then 30 dwarves by now.  The whole city is in flames. Our militia is reduced to 8 ranged and 12 melee soldiers, but none of the is able to fight anymore. Somehow all their nerves have been severed and they are all blinded.
And all dwarves not caught in flames or fighting are near their mental breaking point. The city is lost. We were able to defeat any challenge with ease, that the overworld was holding for us. We were able to withstand the underworld for a very short time, taking a few of them down... but in the end... were no match for it.

23rd Limestone
Somehow the demons aren't invading the city but hanging around in front of it. Only one fire demon is having a duel with our hellfire turret, which is rather pointless as they can't harm each other. If we would be able to take that one down... Meanwhile all my respect goes to the doctors, who are trying everything in the overcrowded and burnt out hospital to save those injured dwarves.
Deep down below we heard noises of some sort of beast, but who would care about this right now? We had enough beasts up here.

3rd Sandstone
The situation hasn't gotten any better. Another couple of soldiers tried to gain control of the entrance, but got stuck in webs. With the demons doing nothing but shooting webs, and the soldiers not getting free, this was another stalemate.

But then today we got another guest.

Maybe this could serve as a distraction?

4th Sandstone
No... the beast made it's way straight into the city. No idea who could stop it now. But still there was some distraction on the outside...

Elves... There would be probably more ambushes out there, as Mosey had called them... Well... They weren't here as our friends... But they weren't friends with the demons either.

7th Sandstone
After the night best had taken down a few civilians and had tried to cut off the head off one one of our unconscious marksdwarves without success due to the helmet, it was finally put to rest by a hammerdwarf, who, even though being injured everywhere did everything to fulfill his duty. Meanwhile on the outside, the feadogs walked into the same trap as our men... They were stuck in an eternal stream of webs.

10th Sandstone
The demons at the gate were defeated. But our situation has not improved by that. Because now they were replaced on about 50 humans all riding war lions and giant war bulls. Also the dam of our magma reservoir below the industry complex had been breached, flooding the moat with magma now.

27th  Sandstone
Orcs and Frost giants have joined the party. We are down to 130 dwarves, but today there were good news.

One child escaped this inferno. May it be the first one of a new generation that may learn from what has happened here.

6th Timber
Even though the humans have retreated, Orcs and Elves are flooding the city. Mosey was one of the first to be struck down. And our militia, now led by DestroyX is resting in the hospital. Our numbers are dwindling. We have no further defenses.

8th Timber
We are at 65 dwarves, i doubt we will last until the end of the season. No one is able to do anything anymore. It just a slaughter.

OOC: my dwarf died at some point, but whatever... ^^

20th Timber
It looks like all those remaining will die of thirst. Out of 36 survivors only for are still standing, the rest is in the hospital. 3 drow shield dancers are standing in the entrance, blocking any of those still able to walk from bringing in water, while the drow are now hitting that one markdwarf llying there in the head for more then 2 weeks. And they can't kill him. Even though i may die... I'm proud of my work. This helm will be legend!

1st Moonstone
Winter arrived. 17 of us are still alive. Some guardians of Armok actually managed to kill the remaining frost giants and row in the city, while the Orcs and Elves retreated, but are still waiting in front of the entrance.

8th Moonstone
12...

Everyone is dying of thirst and hunger in the hospital.
An apostle still able to walk found 3 frost giants in the city and lured them out of the entrance straight into a couple of demons waiting there.
11...
W noticed there were still around 20 frost giants in the upper floor of the barracks. This was also the spot where most of the flying frost giants went earlier... Seems to really attract them.

Meanwhile the clash at the front gate caused the Orcs to invade the city another time...

14th Moonstone
Now there are demons and Orcs fighting each other in the hospital.
DestroyX and a few others were caught in it as well.
8...

20th Moonstone
Our last standing dwarf tried to call the legion... But no one answered our call. It's lost...
4...

10th Opal
3...The last will to fight is broken. The Orcs lost the battle to the demons, who are now in control of the gate. The elves ran, again. Hexxedgarish is now history, as those last signs of life there will be extinguished soon as well. And then there will be only darkness.

(nice webs... ^^)

Wrapup:
In the final fight about 80 demons and 140 other invaders were killed. Oh and 230 dwarves. Sorry for missing the killing blows on named dwarfs, but it turned into a mess rather quickly^^
Overall I think, if I would have made sure, those fliers can't do any harm by flying to my marksdwarves/flying over the wall, I could have won the battle almost with marksdwarves alone. They were actually killing those demons surprisingly fast. But as I didn't.... well... that's the prize you pay :D Any way... It was fun, while it lasted. I of course overdid when calling all other races afterwards, but at this point I thought it may be fun. I don't know if there would have been a way to stabilize whe only calling the humans and elves, but I somehow doubt it, as almost all my dwarves were unable to move, or tantrumming/superdepri. And all my military had enough injuries, that even with permanent treatment they would take a least a season to patch up, if they would ever make it, leaving me unable to defend the end of season attacks.
Thinking about what I learned from this game....
Powerleveling militia is insanely powerful. There was really not a single thing above ground that could fight the militia. Walling of is completely unnecessary. Unless you are fooling around with fire, drakes are awesome first line of defense, but get outmatched later on, which is not a big proble, if you have a decent breeding population. Guardians of Armok are just... WOAH. They are not very dangerous, but can withstand endless punishment, no matter if frost giants, fire, or 2 gazillion bolts and weapons. That makes them perfect to tie whatever while shooting at it, or simply gathering all militia.
At the same time for the first time i managed to have 200 adult dwarfs, less then a dozen unemployed and feeling like i need at least 100 more... Construction above ground takes sooooooo many hands and soooo much time. I used over 15k blocks in the city, and i could build so many things more or made stuff bigger with more details... At the end i had about 35 militia dwarves, 40 masons/architects, about a dozen dwarves in food industries, about 20 for metal industry, half a dozen apostles, similar for woodworking and bonestuff. And still... there were basically no parties ever, and everyone was busy all the time...

Oh and now, if someone wants to have a look at it... here is the save:
http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=8400
Actually... It is playable. There is one child always tantruming, but who cares, a single apostle of armok being able to walk and treating the other remaining adult dwarf. He will probably get back on his feet. So then there are already 2 dwarves. Yes, there is still a dozen frost giants in the barracks, so better avoid that area. Oh, and you are not defenseless. The dining hall houses 9 guardians of armok! This is actually enough to defeat most regular attacks, but none will get there anyway, as the demons won the battle against the Orcs and are now guarding the entrance. The elves ran away, which makes the unitlist quite short...

OOC: update with all the named dwarves final kill lists coming next

Okay, so I have been fooling around a bit in Legends mode...
Looking at my named guardians of armok i found:

At first he was using a crude bronze breastplate, later a crude steel breastplate as weapon. How to make guardians pick up such 'weapons'? Because it obviously tremendously boosted it's killing abilities. Most other guardians had 3-8 kills. (and i had around 10, so they were racking up quite some kills)

Sadly I wasn't able to filter for the drakes, as DF only allows me to filter for name, not for creature type (guardians are all named destroyer...) and i have no clue how to use those other tools.

That's a very embarrasing epitaph :D

Anyway, it was quite an enjoyable read, thanks for sharing!

So it finally took the might of the legendary Gray demon to strike me down.  A worthy death.

Also I believe that the humans, orcs, elves, drow, and frost giants weren't coming to fight us at the end.  Their shamans and scryers probably saw through the void that the demon world had been breached.  That's why they marched alongside eachother into battle.  All the great races of the world converging on Hexxedgarish to try to stop the demon armies.  Only the automatons did not come, since they have no spiritual connection for a warning.

Great read mahrgell.  One of the best forts I've read and been a part of.  Usually I die very early on in most forts but you handles the military perfectly.  I wish we could get migrants in Cathedral.  Under your leadership for a turn and with adamantine you probably could have taken the undead fortress head on.

I look forward to your next challenge fort.

about your cathedral statement:
Not exactly. Even though the undeads themselves wouldn't have been a challenge for 20 steel+ plate dwarves, there are two huge problems with fighting such masses.
1) exhaustion
Even with maxed out attributes, a dwarf simply can't beat 100 skeletons in a row without passing out from exhaustion. And as they don't know how to disengage... They will die at some point, even though it may need 20 pages of skeletons trying to break their helm.
2) The 'I can handle it' effect... Sometimes dwarves seem to charge at random in odd directions... Even though they are in the middle of 50 enemies, they think attacking those 100 guys 20 tiles farther behind may be smart... This leads to single dwarfs fighting dozens of enemies, which will overpower the single dwarf.

This problems could somehow be reduced by instead of attacking the undead, let the undead attack you. So dig a tunnel, create some space farther behind (enough space is important, as dwarves can't dodge in tunnels, greatly reducing their effectiveness, and actually even being outnumbered having enough spaces favors the dwarves)
But as i wrote earlier in the cathedral thread, I doubt the undeads would leave their structure, as the pathfinding would probably break down the moment you open the structure as it has happened in several other fortresses with way less enemies. Also I'm not even sure if those undeads would go for the fortress with intact pathfinding.
And even if you make all those things work out, it may happen, that there is a thin line of undeads trickling out, and then all your soldiers charge at them, kill them immediately, and charge deeper into the structure... Have fun...

But there is one thing i actually wonder.... Why didn't we just try to carve in some fortifications? Set 2 ammocaster to cast copper javelins, let the 10 untrained dudes do some livetraining and have fun ^^ Would probably start slowly, but they would rise in skill incredibly fast and quickly start killing shit quite fast. I would guess it would still take about a year, but it would have been an interesting experiment ^^
This approach is much harder now with all the demons in there ^^ Even though... Do they actually fire through fortification when not directly next to it? Otherwise it would be possible to create fortifications one zlevel above ground, as they won't actively fly next to the fortifications. And with your highpriest having the nofear aura the mining work could be done without problems.

the easist way is of course to carve the fortifications into the adamantine spire directly. You dont breach it, but since the dwarves look into it, the demons are spawned. Inside the locked spire, a nice target.

But great end. Its strange to see one of the largest forts in here, and not the succession fort board. I think if you want more feedback, you can try a thread there. :)
