Check if there is a hair in the optical slot/hole, generally something gets caught in there and it starts acting up.

From my experience with spazzy lasers, paper works pretty well, the only disadvantage being that it might move around with the mouse. It's probably just best to get a mouse mat if you can, they don't tend to be very expensive.

Jee wilikers, I think Highmax is near invulnerable, must have been dunked in the river styx like achilles was.
Just make sure he wears a boot.
