My Dwarf Fortress, rate and critique.
« on: December 29, 2013, 05:45:44 pm »

First floor: The entrance to my fortress. The entrance contains a small barracks. It contains most of my workshops, with a finished goods stockpile on the right.

Second Floor: This contains the residential area, the meeting hall, and the dining hall. It also contains various stockpiles.

Third Floor: The Mineral stockpile, but also a sculpture garden. This floor also contains the nobleman's quarters.

Fourth Floor: This is only my burial chamber at this time.

Fifth Floor: Simply my stone stockpile.

too symmetrical, too regular, not organic enough, not messy enough... well, you got the idea. I love my fortresses to be organic, messy and diverse.

2/10, would not !!FUN!!.

But on a more serious note, any chance of more info? Where's all your industries and farms? Also, have you got a hospital and jail set up? What you your defenses look like?
Like your overall design, pretty aesthetically pleasing. DF just insists on being the most complicated thing since sliced bread. If you factor in everything necessary to make the bread, the knife, and the person to slice it.

This is my current farm, the doctors office is on floor 2 right above the stairs. The defenses consist of 3 layered walls around any applicable area I need defending.

Fair symmetry, but nothing special. I would advise sectionalizing more. More importantly, though, you should definitely look into fractal bedrooms and such. Come up with interesting designs for your floors, for creativity.

On a practical note, I very much disapprove of your elven fortress entrance. Any real dwarf wouldn't make the mountainhalls so exposed to the open; a nice complicated death corridor is perfect for destroying unwanted guests and shows your brand of hospitality much better than a simple door in.

Aesthetically, I approve of your use of military. Not that that's a good idea, but it's Fun, at least.

Overall, 3.5/10.

You're off to a good start, but there's plenty of room for improvement. Here are some thoughts:

--I like what you've done aesthetically on the burial level
--I'm all for an aesthetic rather than an efficient layout, but your bedroom layout is not especially attractive and extremely inefficient. The dwarves at the end have to walk like 80 tiles just to get to the fort!
--Your farms are way too big. Right now it looks like you're letting most of your crops wither. If you successfully farm and store all that food, you'll be on your way to a quick FPS death.
--Have you survived a siege yet? Your layout is not at all secure. Kudos if you're intentionally doing one of those no-trap open-fort challenges, though.
--It looks like you haven't even breached the first caverns, let alone reached the magma sea.

Wasn't there something about large open spaces that consumes FPS?

I like the necropolis design, even if it looks kind of difficult to expand in case of need.

x2theone2x, your fort is lacking dorfliness. Where are the goblin corpses, vomit and blood? Where is the obsession with efficiency? What features make this fortress unique? It just seems like a bunch of big open 1 z level rooms.

x2theone2x, why did you place stairs that way? It doesn't make any sense to me.

The fortresses are penal colonies.
The mountainhome has far too many degenerates too deal with by itself, so it sends out minor nobles to establish penal colonies across the world.

It makes my inner effective-use-of-space drive weep, but I guess if the design works for you...

I've taken everything you've all said to aid towards the next fortress I'm constructing. I'll update the thread when it's suitable for view.

Your stockpile sizes could be reduced by 50-95% if you used the Minecart Stop Quantum Stockpile technique.

Do you have [INVADERS:OFF]?

I settled on an island with goblins, humans, and elves, and dwarves. The goblins haven't been a problem, and I've only ever had one, " a horrible evil has come across your lands", something like that. It was a werebeast and was one shot.
