Can anyone remember the name of this fantasy series (books)?
« on: December 29, 2013, 01:49:21 pm »

I read a lot of books from one series (well, one universe/author) about ~8 years ago but I forgot the name.

I do remember that the main character of the first part (~5 books) was called Puk/Luk/Tuk/?. He had a friend who I think was called Robert, or maybe Michael. Puk eventually became a wizard, travelled to an alien planet filled with stereotypical (Imperial) Japanese people (aka: short, emperor, honour > life, super racist, etc) who had Ant-people as slaves, and married some girl there. Robert found the armour of a Dragonrider (species, not class) and became immortal. It was a Dutch translation so the names might not be correct. There were Dwarfs in the first few novels but they were never mentioned in any of the later ones.

I know more random details but I'm pretty sure anyone who knows the books I'm talking about ought to know what I am talking about.

Nope :c. Earthsea's archipelago isn't correct and it's not Sci-Fi.

Have a picture of what little I remember of the map:

Ah, you'd want the Midkemia series. Part 1 is The Riftwar Saga, with Magician: Apprentice and Magician: Master.

There's like 10 other books after those too. Good series.

YES!

I read a ton of these books as a kid <3. I wasn't very impressed with the world/setting but I loved the characters/stories in general.

Try out Daughter of the Empire series. (Co-written by Feist and Jan Wurts.) It explores the Tsurani empire, and the world is pretty good. It made me appreciate everything Feist wrote on his own more.

Is that about a woman being a countess-equivalent, freeing the Antmen, and marrying a redheaded giant?

More like a woman being a beseiged lady of the household, but yes. It's actually a better read than that sentence implies :P

The series (Daugher, Servant, Mistress) also bridges the gap between the end of the Riftwar and the start of the Serpent War sagas.

I asked because I already read that one :P.

I liked those books set in Alien Japan the most of all of the Midkemia books. Will check out that co-author.

The insectoids were the Cho-Jah, and iirc, they were never slaves.  They were highly sought out by the various great houses of the Empire due to the crafts and exotic products the hives made.  Cho-Jah warriors were equivalent to at least 3 human soldiers and would fight for their allied houses, with one big exception.  Cho-Jah warriors only fought enemy humans.  Cho-Jah never fought Cho-Jah, regardless of hive or house affiliation.

True, plus it's been a LONG time since I've read the series ;).  It's also possible that I'm conflating it with other works out there.

Nah, what you wrote is pretty much the situation I remember it to be until the Alien Japanese as explored a bit more in some other books.
