You are an Inquisitor
« on: December 29, 2013, 02:28:30 am »

The wagon rattles, and shakes violently as it hits what feels like every bump in the poorly maintained road tossing you around, and managing to give you a number of new bruises despite your best efforts to stay in your seat. Your small sack of belongings is lying the floor pinned between the wall, and your foot with the emblem of your office tied tightly to it, a diamond shaped piece of iron bearing a complex design of two crossed pistols signifying everything that you were to uphold. That single piece of medal marks you as an Inquisitor, one of the Order of Blackstone, to the common folk you are one who looks for heresy and treason though that is far from your true purpose ... your job is to hunt down the creatures of the night, to safeguard the world from their danger, and keep knowledge of their existence a secret at all costs even if the price is someone's life.

You are currently on your way to the village of Brightwood, a cheery little farm village with a population of roughly three-hundred and fifty, lately their have been strange occurrences near the village, rumors of disappearances, strange lights in the woods at night, and that sort of thing. As you realize that these cases almost always are the result of drunk villagers imagining things and making excuses to drink you think back on your past, marveling on how you came to such a righteous office.

Your name is ...
You are ... (Male or Female)

During your training as an Inquisitor you excelled at ...

(A) You excelled when it came to combat training, half way through your training you were besting the trainers more then they were you until finally it got to a point that the trainers conceded, agreeing that none of them had anymore to teach you.  You were a master at the sword, a marksman with the pistol, and displayed a talent for awareness during combat that even experienced Inquisitors envied.

(B) You showed a certain knack for the more technical, and knowledge oriented parts of your training expressing great talent in learning the alchemy, basic rituals, and general information they taught you. By the time you were appointed the position of Inquisitor you could create alchemical poultices, and potions that the entirety of the other candidates for Inquisitor struggled with.

(C) You expressed great skill in the linguistics training the Order gave, you had a certain kind of air about you that seemed to make people relax, and tell what they truly thought around you, and for those that seemed to resist that you were a master at putting the pieces together to the subtle hints, and slip-ups people made in their usual speech. Quite a few of your teachers agreed that you would have no difficulty convincing most people to do what you want if you put some effort into it.

As part of your appointment to Inquisitor your Mentor gifted you with ...

(A) A superbly crafted flintlock pistol emblazoned with silver intricate carvings of roses, and vines all along the sides of it, the weapon itself seemed to radiate a feeling of rightness, and your Mentor informed you that it was a blessed weapon. It is truly a marvelous weapon, and one worthy of an Inquisitor.

(B) A Writ of Harkus, a special document backed by the national government and the Order itself giving you certain freedoms, and rights beyond that given to you by your Inquisitorial symbol.  The first and foremost of these is the right to recruit someone into the Order, and into your (as the term is within the Order) Cabal, and the second important effect is that it grants the bearer almost free roam of anywhere within the kingdom. Such a Writ is usually reserved for Inquisitors who have weathered a few years of service, or several extremely successful mission.

(C) A thick tome containing knowledge on several advanced rituals, alchemical formulas, and even some of the more obscure creatures of the night by the name of the Hunter's Guide. It is filled to the brim with knowledge that could save an Inquisitor's hide, and give them an edge above many others, the things within this book could mean life or death in the war against the creatures of the night.

I agree that C - C ought to make for one very interesting character. Maybe not the most efficient "out in the field", but we can prepare adequately. So yeah, "Al" we shall be.

NOBODY EXPECTS THE BAY12 INQUISITION!

Not sorry at all.

To do list:
  • [ ] : Yell "NOBODY EXPECTS THE BAY12 INQUISITION!" while overhearing peasants talking about the Inquisition. Maybe recites the whole monologue as well and walking away leaving them confused.

Add that to the mission objectives list.

Also C - B, B seems much more useful.

Eh, good point, I guess. I just wanted to have the Hitchiker's Guide to the Night Creatures, but I suppose the Writ might come in handy if you want to, say, get some meatshields.

You snap back from your revelry as the wagon grinds to a halt, smacking you around a few more times in the process, and suddenly the driver's voie echoes back to you,

"Madam we are here, welcome to the cozy little village of Brightwood, no charge for the ride of course Madam Inquisitor, I have to support the country anyway I can now don't I?"

As the man talks you can tell he's quite nervous, most likely from having to carry an Inquisitor all the way from the capital to this backwoods village, perhaps he even thought you were going to kill him for some fabricated knowledge of heresy. You smirk slightly at the the thought, the common folk weaved tales about the Inquisitors that sowed terror which did you just fine even i most of the time Inquisitors were rather nice people. Untying the pendant from your bag you hang it around your neck before tossing your pack over your shoulder, and stepping down out of the cramped wagon you take in the sights around you. The village is just ahead, you being on the very outskirts, can tell that its surprisingly large for a farming community as you count nearly forty hovels huddled around the other buildings in town, of course the most prominent places you can see are the town's church on the far edge of the village, the town square and the rather homely looking town hall down the street, and a single inn across the road from you. The inn has a sign that reads 'The Broken Plow', and looks very well kept for a village tavern, a number of farmers coming from a hard days work in the fields are already hard at work drinking their spare money away inside.

To the north, and west of the village is flat, rolling plains covered with fields and dotted with yet more hovels while to the south a river marks the border between the village, and the border fort Brakenwall, you can just make out the ferry house from here. Finally to the west you see the edge of the solid mass of trees, and underbrush that is Grimdall Forest, a massive almost jungle like forest that stretches for miles and miles till it finally eases up outside of the port city of Netersburg. Turning yourself to your task you think about what to do, you need to learn some more about these incidents in town and start your investigation soon, but you also need a base of operations, somewhere to work out of that isn't privy to the eyes of the common folk ...

Well, if nobody has any more suggestions, then I get control of the character for the turn, that would be a bit fun.

Actually, lodging in that fort sounds good. Reliable information about recent events, and maybe even some support? Either way, we ought to make a visit there one of our priorities.
