Powered Screw Pump Questions
« on: December 28, 2013, 08:47:10 pm »

Hi, I've been going at my current fortress for while now and I began to build a screw pump system that would carry it about 13 z levels.  I built a windmill at the top, with 2 vertical axles and only one of the machines is powering up.  My question is, do I have to build an axle and/gear assembly on every level to connect all the pumps? Also if anyone has advice, please feel free to respond.  Much appreciated, thank you.

No, if you build a pump stack. Probably yes, if you have some other design.

The fortresses are penal colonies.
The mountainhome has far too many degenerates too deal with by itself, so it sends out minor nobles to establish penal colonies across the world.

Pumps will only transmit power to pumps above and below them if there is a hole. Since there must be a hole, the pumps must be supported, meaning there is something to connect to (another pump, a gear, a vertical axle) above or below them.

Also, keep in mind that a windmill can only power 4 pumps at best. If you look at any of the machines, you'll see how much power you're producing and how much power you're consuming: IIRC, a pump takes 10 units, and a windmill typically produces 20 or 40 units.
