... honestly, Tim, it being a long game despite it just makes things worse. I don't like the pressure a time limit imposes, even if it can be lifted or manipulated easily. It's a major negative for me, and I have and will in the future put games down because of it. Occasionally I can play despite it or through it (I've beat dungeon crawl a couple times, ferex, and that goddamn food clock is basically the same issue), but I have to be in the right sort of mood and I've never lucked onto being able to play MM when I was in that sort of mood.

Really, if it auto-reset at the end of the third day instead of game overing that would be considerably more bearable, but even then just the time limit being there is... annoying. Annoying enough it's kept me from playing the game. I honestly hate being on the clock, especially in my leisure activities. Certain genres are more forgivable for that sort of thing, but something like a mainline LoZ game... not so much.

I can deffinitly see that, and for the most part I'm the same. I've made an exception for MM and enjoyed it immensly, but that's probably only because of my deep love for the series. I just wanted to explain it a bit more so the whole picture was there. It's a major feature of the game, so it's deffinitly something that can easily make or break it depending on the person.

The 2D games are better.  Ocarina of Time felt so slow paced compared to Link to the Past.

IIRC it does reset at the end of the third day, it just seems like a game over.

It feels like a game over. I wonder if it adds +1 to your death count if you let the moon fall?

Yeah, basically what Frumple said. Time limit in an open world? Fuck off. Do everything over and over again every day? Fuck. Off. Ocarina was an adventure, MM was a Sisyphean trial of my patience.

MM also looked to me... well, like what it was: a game made on the cheap that just re-used assets from an earlier, better one. Offhand I couldn't name more than 3 characters from Majora's Mask, but I crack a smile immediately at Darunia's derp-dance, or clench my fist at Jabu-Jabu's shock hentai tentacles, or get goosebumps over the death-ride boat. Cuckoo collection. Graveyard race. Song of muthafuckin' Storms. Versus uh... help an old lady get her purse back... wow so excite.

I just couldn't get over the feeling that MM felt like a gimmicky ROMhack, even though I didn't know what those were at the time.

My thoughts EXACTLY.

Finishing OoT was extremely satisfying. Finishing MM was a job. I have replayed OoT a couple of times, but couldn't stand MM for more than an hour when I went back to it.

MM just plain felt like a cash grab with an obnoxious gimmick.

It's been a long, long time since I played either of them. Out of the two Ocarina of Time is the most memorable for me. It was the first big 3d adventure game that I had ever played. You could do all sorts of things I'd never seen in video games before. You could fly around a 3d environment with a hookshot, you could speed across a sprawling landscape on a horse. Perhaps Majora's Mask did things better, I really don't remember, but it could never match the "wow" factor of Ocarina of Time simply because Ocarina of Time came first and broke a lot of ground that hadn't been broken before.

I still to this day remember all of the Ocarina songs even though I probably haven't heard them in over a decade.

I love Majora's Mask themes, story, and elements. But I fucking LOVE Ocarina's gameplay. I'll look at Majora and think of it as a brilliant story with gameplay that tends to annoy me, just because I'm not a big fan of time limits, even if they reset. Ocarina... I could gush about that game for hours on end.
So, Majora: Wonderful story and characters... Pretty annoying gameplay. Ocarina? FUCKING... GENIUUUUS!

I feel the exact opposite. I feel that finishing OoT was a job, and beating MM was extremely satisfying. 100%ing MM was one of the best gaming days of my childhood.

Now, I love both of them to death, and still have the cases and cartridges for both from my childhood, when I want to play one of the 3D Zelda games, it's always MM I come back to. OoT was the game-changer, yes. But MM took the formula so much further and upped the ante for future action/adventure games. Some people hate the time limit, I enjoy it. OoT has a nearly static world, but the world of MM feels so alive and vibrant (at least for its time). NPC's live or die depending on your actions, people find love because of your actions. And, finding all the masks didn't feel like a chore, like most modern completionist tasks do(or like those damned gold skulltulas in OoT do).

Ocarina of Time for me. Didn't much care for Majora's Mask as much for almost all the same reasons others have mentioned. Plus, the beginning just plain weirded me out as kid.

I love them both.
I love OoT and the Master Quest version gives it some replayability.
I love the feeling of imminent doom and dread that always looms over MM...

I prefer majora's mask over OOT, but I could see where people would dislike MM. There is a lack of a cohesive "going forward" feel to the entire thing, as your progress is reset at the end of every cycle, with only a mask to show for it. This is unfortunately fairly integral to the game being fairly bleak and depressing (for a zelda game) however, so there's not much to be done about it. OOT is fairly generic, but it's not a bad generic. It's one of my favorites of the more traditional zelda games.

Basically I feel it comes down to what you want out of a game. MM is closer to being an emotional experience (I would put that into less pretentious words if I could but a virus is currently running wild on my throat so I'm a little out of it), whereas OOT is closer to being an adventurous thing.

With majora's mask there's not really much of a conclusion, it just sort've... ends. But again, that's part of the feel of the thing! All that work just to make things to how they used to be. There's no long term threat that's been oppressing them, just a moon shows up, most people don't even believe it's a significant threat, so when it magically goes away it's very easy to just imagine everyone putting it off as a fluke and  going on with their lives. No big deal. That kid was just a kid, nothing special. The entire game world is just very indifferent to the player, even as far as a zelda game goes. This combined with the oppressive feel to the game can very easily make the game not "fun" to a lot of people, and that's a perfectly respectable opinion.

Majora's mask also has that open ended interpretation of the various themes in the game (notably the final boss's various forms and the skull kid and such), and I always love the hell out of that.

Majora's Mask's levels all seem to be built around the idea of the various stages of loss and the grieving process (in Link's case the loss of Navi) - denial, acceptance etc. The villagers at the start are all in denial of the moon that's going to smack into them.

If it comes down to graphics, I have to say MM wins. Sure they reused stuff, but the new stuff looks absolutely amazing, like the post-processing effects in some of the cutscenes. Besides, the 'L is real 2401' texture from Mario 64 can be seen in OoT's dungeons.

As for the time limit, I like it. It's definitely more interesting than another straightforward Zelda adventure would be, and it makes for a lot of neat sidequests.

For the stories, I'd say MM wins. OoT is great and has some really neat moments, but it isn't mind-blowingly creative or anything. Three dungeons in the first part, then another bunch of dungeons, then Ganon and the end of the game. :-\

I will say this: while I think OoT was the better game and enjoyed it the most of the two, MM has defenitely been a greater inspiration for many things. From creepypastas like BENDROWNED to entire fan-made musical albums like Time's End (which has a permanent place on my mp3 player, fyi), the impact MM has had on Internet culture cannot be denied.

Ocarina of Time was the first foray into 3D for the Zelda games... and it made a lasting impact on the series and action/adventure games as a whole. Putting that gameplay into a fully 3D world on a limited console compared to the others of that generation had to have taken some shortcuts, such as recycled textures from Mario 64, but I don't think it had too much of a detriment on the overall gameplay, since the game for its time looked amazing.

Majora's Mask was a refinement on that idea, and I feel it sported better gameplay overall, but it didn't sell half as well as its precursor and was released a bit later in the console's lifetime. The 3 day time limit is a point of contention for some, but I enjoy the feeling of needing to do things before, you know, the world ends. It lets them pack a whole lot into a single game world, since most points aren't the same on day 1 as they are day 2, let alone night time.

Both are great games for their time period, and I've been churning hours into Majora's Mask in particular on my Android tablet via an emulator.
