I noticed that Bay 12 doesn't have a real Wargaming thread on the whole site(unless the search is lying to me), and I thought that I should set up one as I love Wargaming, and I am quite sure that some people here enjoy it too, so I thought it may be a good idea to establish this thread.

So, what do you guys play?

I think there might have been a few threads floating around about specific games at various points.  Don't have any links on hand though.

Anyway, I don't play any wargames anymore, but I used to play Warhammer 40,000 up through 5th edition.  I started to lose interest for various reasons around that point, and haven't been able to get back into it since.  I don't like a lot about the way they're taking the whole setting, and the hilarity of its expense only gets worse as the years go by.  It's a pretty safe bet that I'll never actually play the wargame ever again.

I've tried Warmachine but couldn't get into it either.  No wargames really interest me enough to try to get past the barrier to entry, so I've even tried to create one a couple of times.  That never made it too far into the design phase.

I play hex and counter wargames, mainly ASL and stuff by GMT games. Been digging through the internet for fun fantasy and sci-fi wargames from the 70's and 80's of late. I've tried a bunch of stuff by matrix games, but the prices turn me off and I always find that I just can't be arsed learning a game on the computer, yet I love massive complexity when I have tiny bits of cardboard to push around.

Don't do much in the way of miniatures wargaming, though I used to when I was younger - I have piles of horrendously painted Blood Angels packed away in the loft which I can't bear to look at. I used to think that "dipping" literally meant shoving the model in the paint pot. Durp. I do play minis games now and then though, with some friends of mine who have plenty of spare stuff.

There were certainly seperate threads (the Warhammer 40k one springs to mind). However, I couldn't find a universal thread.

Sad thing is that the most obvious stuff is very expensive(really - $40 for 10 space marines?) however part of the reason I set this up is to provide information to those who are interested but can't find an affordable way of doing it. For example, if you can get over the tiny size of infantry, 6mm is cheap and brilliant.

Yeah, the price of Games Workshop stuff is disgraceful. And you're right about small scale stuff, I actually find little tiny tanks very appealing too.

Any specifics like tabletop or computer wargaming?

We've had some success getting some Bay12ers to play Battletech through MegaMek/Mekwars. I haven't had much time/availability to try to convince more people into it lately, but I've found Mekwars 3025 to be thoroughly enjoyable

Also, Erkki ran some amazing War in the Pacific: Admiral's Edition LPs back in the day, and Fishbreath just started a new Command Ops LP (in the appropriate subforum).

I personally enjoyed Naval Campaigns: Midway, for a time due to it being carrier warfare, and had some fun with Unity of Command, but for some reason static campaigns put me off a bit. I'd love a more sandboxy, procedurally generated campaign for it

More of a lean toward tabletop I hope, because there is a lot of discussion of computer wargames already.

Could try DBA or Blitzkrieg/Cold war commander.

I retired from large scale wargaming, Warhammer 40k and Fantasy, about a year ago now. It just became a bit too repetitive and too much of a money/time sink. Now I'm starting to eye the more Skirmish focused games, particularly Infinity, Pulp City, and Mercs. They have a much lower start up cost, cheap to free rule books, amazing minatures, and some clever and different rules.

I've heard some good things about Memoir '44. Never played it though.

Memoir '44 is interesting, though I'd definitely consider it more of a boardgame than a wargame. The ruleset is a bit more sleek and lightweight, though it still has a ton of luck involved

I was gonna say that too, from watching the video, but again I haven't played so I wouldn't make that kinda judgment. I think the luck etc. is meant to help simulate poor communications and intelligence in a wargame. It's like morale rules forcing your men to flee when you would want them to grind onward to their deaths. Rules enforcing some of the problems a leader faces.

Hmmm, perhaps the Combat Mission series might be up your alley? Tactical battles set in WW2 on the western front.
