also, just so everyone knows. That surprise pirate was a random event. That'll probably be their strongest ship for a LONG time. we could have easily gotten that ship had the RNG rolled the other way.

I agree with you though, moar navy!

Anyhoo, was that too long of an update? I'll gladly do shorter ones.

I must say that I agree with Representative Roberts, these pirates must be destroyed before they become a threat to our mining operations and merchants. And for that to happen we need a big and strong navy to combat them. A strong navy will also deter any other empire to commit a hostile act upon us.

I am man of science an philopsopy, this is what I strive for. But recent event have shown that there are people out there who cannot be reasoned with, people who live for violence and greed. We make friends where we can, we speak softly, but we must also cary a big stick.

So we must expand our fleet, that I agree with, lets make a stick big enough to wack those pirates back to the Stone Age.

That said, I must out point out that so far all our violent encounters where we shot first and asked later ended in defeat, only trough enormous sacrifices did we preserve. One pirate ship devastated our fleet! What if they had been more organized? An entire fleet of them from another civilization? I think this prove that a big stick is not enough, there will always be bigger sticks than ours. In the end, diplomacy and science will carry the day I believe. Oh, and of course our intelligence agents have shown that they too play an important part in securing space for everyone.

I propose that part of our military buildup should be fortresses defending our assets, let our enemies meet and break on an iron wall!

Furthermore, as the Kadians living have already proven their worth by improving our shipbuilding methods I suggest we work towards expanding their presence in our civilization, I believe they deserve it.

As for their parent civ, I believe we should try establish tighter bonds with them so we can share scientific discoveries as that seems to be their forthe and being a dependable lot I believe they would prove reliable allies.

Now, the industrious Ugnari have been very friendly and I do believe them to be peaceful enough but their mining station close to our borders cause me some worry as they seem, ah, somewhat stupid and unreliable. I fear they may be fooled into doing something reckless. I think we should look into buying the station from them to secure our borders.

On the note of borders; looking at our star map I think we should pursue a colonization strategy that would leave our local star cluster under our domain. This way there would be a large gulf separating our territory from any enemies with relatively few and easily controllable corridors into our realm.

Oh, and can we have a dossier with information on the so called Quameno so we can better decide on policies?


Suggestion: Expand military, perhaps with fortresses as our main defensive line. I like the carriers too tough. And hunt down the damn pirates!
Suggestion: Make better friends with everyone; Kadians in particular for science. Trading and industry for the Ugnari (Maybe their stupidity can be exploited?).
Suggestion: expand Kadian presence in our civ for moar bonuses
Suggestion: colonize our local star cluster so it falls entirely within our domain for prettier borders and easy defense

OOC: depends on game mechanics, balancing and how the enemy ships are designed. For example lets arbitrarily say (since i don't know the game) the pirate ship has 100 point shield and dito health and one 50 point damage weapon with a 10 second reload and our frigates had 20 each for shield and health, 10 damage, 2 sec reload.

Lets take two frigates, they have a one shot firepower of 20 together. Lets say they all shoot at the same time, one frigate is destroyed (shields plus health = 40 vs 50 attack, wasting 10 points of attack) and the pirate loose shields equal to 20. The remaining frigate attacks 5 times more before being destroyed by the next attack. The pirate lost all of 70 shield.

Now, lets take a fighter. It have only a measly 1 shield, 1 health and a 0.5 attack weapon with 0.1 sec reload.

Same as before; firepower of 20. So 40 fighters. The first attack does 20 damage as before and one fighters is lost (the pirate waste 38 points of damage) 0.1 seconds later the fighters fire again for 19 damage. And so again 0.1 seconds later. A few seconds later the pirate is destroyed with only one fighter lost.

Such short reloading would be OP, with an incredible DPS. But wait there is more! Lets give them all the same reload time and thus the same DPS. The pirate would still destroy the two frigates in two shots and suffer only 30 damage. But it would take it 40 shots to destroy all the fighters who would continue dealing damage to the last one for a total 820 (if my calculations are correct) which means the pirate us long gone before that.

Of course, there is many game mechanics that can change that so you may be entirely right, pending on how the game works. It's just that it destroying our largest ships does not mean it can easily handle our smallest.

OOC: I dunno, we sent in HORDES of smaller ships, and it handily took them out so...

Though you do have a point, but that means we do need to design an escort ship specifically against fighters in order to render other carrier fleets powerless against us.

Serious Politics: Space Edition

Senator Scoopius Beard of the central logistics committee

Esteemed Ladies and Gentlemen of the Terran Congress, both Human and Kiadian, today I break my characteristic silence to perhaps convince some of you that our current military research is indeed beneficial to our glorious republic. Now, let me begin by presenting the facts. We have the largest economy among any of the civilizations we have had contact with and we occupy a very strategic location in our galaxy, both very powerful advantages. However, of the super-powers of this galaxy we are the smallest. Our local star cluster is relatively small, although resource-rich, and while we currently have the most raw manpower of any civilization our growth rates our low. Therefore, if we are to maintain our advantageous position we must indeed build our military power, but contrary to the beliefs of many of our great Representatives and Senators, I believe that we should indeed invest in new spacecraft carriers. Here is my proposal:

In the coming years, we will assuredly maintain a smaller navy than our competitors due to the high cost of colonization and to combat this we require a large force-multiplier. To attain that I suggest carriers: As long as we keep them out of direct harm, the maintenance costs are relatively low and the fighters and bombers kept aboard require practically no maintenance. Combined with the high cumulative damage of the carrier craft, I feel as if this is certainly the best course of action.

Now, I am not suggesting that we continue this policy ad infitum, I suggest that until we consolidate our home star cluster and perhaps even begin colonization of another we center our fleet around small groups of patrol carriers. When we are ready to reform our navy again I suggest that we decommission a number of these patrol carriers, to be replaced with full-size dedicated carriers, and detach the remaining patrol carriers from their fleets to be given indefinite cruises. Our new fleets based around Capital Ship groups will contain the new dedicated carriers as fleet-support vessels.

In addition, to answer some earlier things, colonization is limited by 2 sectors away, and while ships CAN travel farther than the amount of fuel in their tanks allow them to, they incur significant penalties while doing so.

Even more OOC, for clarification: The super pirate ship is one of a number of abandoned ships that were seeded at the creation of the game.  Basically, the tech on these ships are 2-3 levels above the average starting tech level in the universe.  It would not be too surprising if you encounter at least 1 more, in the hands of another enemy.  You also do have the chance of acquiring one yourself, RNG was just horrible to you this time around.
There are also derelict ships...

If you run out of fuel, don't wait on the ship.  It'll take a long while to get anywhere.

My most esteemed colleagues, While I believe there is much to learn from dissembling the abandoned cruiser that our brave explorers have found. it is my belief that much of the advanced technology found on-board will never work again if we let our scientists have their way with it.

For those of you that have read the now available records regarding the unfortunate first two engagements on the advanced pirate cruiser, it should be painfully clear that we are still too unprepared to deal with their advanced technology it is my belief that the pirates have found an ancient cruiser to base their power around and now that we have stumbled upon an advanced cruiser of our own I say it is time to give the pirate scum a taste of their own medicine.

I propose we commandeer the abandoned cruiser and after mastering its operation install it as the flagship of an anti pirate task force. we should review the records of the previous engagements... and if this cruiser is deemed on equal footing. we'll send it along with an auxiliary force to exact vengeance for the brave men and women we lost in the engagements.

We should not, Nay... we can not squander this opportunity for vengeance.

Esteemed colleagues of the Terran Congress, my apologies for the lateness of my response. I have been deeply engaged in my assigned task of assimilating the Kiadian people into our Republic. Thus far the natives have welcomed us with open arms. Why, only the other day I was out shooting pulsating mind tigers with the Raj when he said to me: “Galoop ballareep nangooblie-zop dingowalla-pop!” I believe the warmth of that statement should be evident to everyone.

Further evidence of their successful assimilation into our culture can be found in the following picture taken by one of my clones early on Tuesday morning in the foothills of the Northern continent:



The Kiadians have been doing wonders for our trade, the sale of false moustaches alone has gone up over 300%. Meanwhile, they have proven themselves adept at scientific and space engineering endeavours. Rather bloody marvellous, if you ask me.

Now, I must address the business of Senate and State.

First, the extended dossiers presented to me by my staff indicate that we are ahead in economic terms, yet behind in military matters. The recent skirmish with a highly advanced piratical space ship lends credence to this. We were able to overwhelm them only through the superior numbers engendered by the veritable economic powerhouse of our glorious homeworld. Therefore, my dear colleagues, we should funnel as much money as we can spare into the construction of a powerful navy. I am not the first to say this by any means, I wish only to add my voice to the choir.

On the subject of naval matters, there has been some discussion as to the direction of research. It is imperative that we take an edge over both friend and foe alike  in matters technological as soon as possible. To that end, I recommend we disassemble the newly found space hulk in order to unlock its secrets. I would further mention at this point that this sort of task is the very thing that my Kiadian constituents are adepts of. If they can make my clockwork watch fire lasers, they can uncover the secrets of that ship in no time! Additionally,  I am of the opinion we should follow a doctrine of superiority in numbers, gleaned through small short range fighters operating from a mother ship. It is in this area we should focus our research, until such a time a we can field larger, better armed and armoured vessels.

To address the right-honourable representative Mikheal Tallos directly: That one ship would outclass all of our other ships completely. While yes, it would make an excellent flagship in some respects, would any of our other naval assets be able to keep up with it? Should the ship be lost in combat with overwhelming numbers, what would we fall back on? Would we be able to commit the asset to combat knowing that we could potentially lose the secrets of one of the most advanced spaceships we have ever seen? Commissioning such a vessel should be a last ditch action in a difficult war,  not something we do in a period of relative peace.

The next topic of discussion I wish to expand upon is interstellar relations. At this point, I have little to say. Obviously we should avoid war with potential threats such as the immediately hostile insectoids and Mortalen, but nor should we be naïve appeasers. I am of the opinion that we should gain closer relations with the Ugnari and independent Kaidians, securing alliances in a dangerous galaxy as soon as possible.

To finish my extended missive, I have one final suggestion. I propose a great building scheme across all of our colonies, constructing space ports in orbit. These would contain command and control assets for future naval actions, act as logistical centres, repair and supply private space traffic both aligned and neutral, draw trade to our worlds and cement our control over our burgeoning republic. However, I am fully aware of our present difficulties with materials, so this can be made low priority if necessary.
