I did something stupid and barely survived
« on: December 25, 2013, 04:35:46 pm »

I just started adventure mode(I already have some experience with fortress mode), and I finished my first quest(kill an outlaw), with my 3 companions all dead.
Like the title says, I did something really stupid; I didnt save after I won the riot.

I should have known better.

It might not sound so bad, but you must know something else to understand why this is such a crappy situation:
I was using the fast travel screen to get back to town and on my way there was a river, so I decided to stop there and cross it, and then go on with the fast travel screen.
So I swum thru the river, and when I set my first step in the river, an alligator came charging. On my way to the bandit camp I encountered a few alligators, but I thought I killed them all. So I ran out of the river and killed it, and now my character is faint, bleeding, and has a few other wounds, but is alive.
I am backing up my save now, just in case...
I guess that I will die anyway, but obviously, I want to prevent that. So I would like to know if there is any way to heal major wounds in the beginning of adventurer mode.
Edit: Oh, and it turns out I cant stand. I dont have crutches.

Oh, never mind.
Apperently, wounds heal over time. But I still cant stand. Where do I get crutches?

The best way to demonstrate it to him is take a save of 40 year old fortress with 150 dwarves in it on a good sized embark with a volcano that just breached the circus and install it on his gaming rig and watch it bring his rig to its knees.

The only way to heal wounds in vanilla adventure mode is to either wait for it to heal or get bit by a werebeast and transform, but that requires recieving further injuries.

Certain body materials do not heal, such as nails, tendons, and motor nerves. Damage to any of these results in permanent function loss, and an upper spinal injury will usually leave you slithering around like a snake until you can find a werebeast.
Flesh wounds, on the other hand, are wholly survivable and will hill to perfect health over time. It's the blood loss you have to watch out for.
More serious wounds usually leave scars after healing, which can be read in the character description for added flavor.

Your wounds heal at a rate directly related to your recuperation attribute, and there's more than a few number crunchers around here who could tell you exactly how long a specific injury might take to heal if they felt like it.
I'm not one of them.

You figured it out, gratz. Crutches can sometimes be bought at stores or found among piles of phat lewt, otherwise you'd need to visit one of your abandoned fortress and crawl around looking for one.

Thanks. Fortunately I am pretty near a market, and a fortress nearby so I can "restock" on companions XD
But still, what is "phat lewt"? Sorry if Im being such a noob all time ^^

Phat lewt is the entire point of adventuring. Seeing as how a dwarf can't normally get alcohol in adventure mode, one has to settle for the next best thing; mountains of wealth earned through bloodshed.

Just search fortresses until you find one.

Pro tip(Actually, an exploit): If you equip a crutch, then throw it (don't unequip, throw), the effect never dissapear. Is posible to walk around whitout crutches or legs that way.

In a hole in the ground there lived a dwarf. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a dwarf fortress, and that means magma.

Do people enjoy crawling around town looking for a shop with crutches? The first thing I mod in is carving crutches from bones :). Also it's important to mod in a full restoration item which costs some rare materials in case you have some really important adventurer you wants to fix.

You could try making it consume the prepared hearts of five different creatures (easy) and require the use of mortar and pestle, both of which can be obtained from night creature lairs (slightly harder).

The only way (that I know of) to fix your injuries would be to use a temporary transformation syndrome, which I would attach to some ingestable liquid to consume at your pleasure.
