The Official Bay 12 Fifty-Two Books Challenge: 2014 Edition
« on: December 25, 2013, 03:36:05 pm »

So last year Vector vagel7 apparently hosted it, and I counted maybe ten books. I read a lot more than that, but I didn't count them. Anyways, since she's hosting the other thing this year, I'm going to host this year's. Here are the rules:

-You should try to read fifty-two books this year. Nobody's really counting, but it's a good goal.
-Rereads are allowed only if you last read them before 2014. You can't count one book twice.
-A short story is not a book, although a collection of them is.
-Graphic novels and children books don't count.
-An omnibus counts for each book that is in it.
-Apparently you should notify me by PM if you reach your goal.

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

My name is not vagel7 o_O

I'm not sure if I'm going to do this this year or not... I'll have to see.

I don't think I'm going to do this again. I should make 52 just under the wire this year, but it ended up being more of a stress than anything, having that goal and knowing I could reach it if I sacrificed time doing other things. This year I want to spend more time writing, which means less time reading. But good luck to all who try this year!

Eh. It poked me into reading a bit more last year, so I'm in for the 52 again in 2014, even if I didn't quite hit it this year.

Sounds good, and I have such a stack of unread books from last year it'll be easier than looking for books all the time. Last year I was doing pretty well until being a wingnut got in the way of glorious productivity.

I'm in. Hell, with my reading speed and free time, I can maybe do 52 in 6 months. We will see...

I never know what to read. Could we integrate a book recommendation list into this challenge? Or should I start a separate book recommendation thread?

For those stumbeling across this thread, here are some off of the top of my head:

Isaac Asimov - The Bicentennial Man and Other Stories
Richard Adams - Watership Down
Hemingway - Old Man and the Sea
Franz Kafka - Metamorphosis

Edit: A real recommendation is Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality. A fanfic where Harry was raised by academic parents and learned to think logically and scientifically, before being released upon the magical world.

BOOKS!

I'll try to read 52. I read significantly more than that in 2012 and 2013, but now that I have internet I'm not reading as much.

... Eh, might as well. Went over fairly comfortably this year, be interesting to see if the trend stays the next.

As before, as insurance against my filthy fanfic reading ways* and recent-ish trend toward reading more shorter fics, my goal will be 52 books/fanfics and 5.2 million words, as minimums. More is fine, of course. Personal addendum: Incomplete stuff is fine, word count only up to finished point if more comes in between finishing and year end and I don't catch back up, but I do have to actually reach the end of material-at-time-of-reading for it to count. Minimum 30k words for any individual work.

*I can't afford actual books, really. Or the gas and effort to hunt them for cheap. Could re-read stuff I've already got, but that would take hunting it down and digging it out and re-reading instead of new and interesting and... nah. This is for fun :P

Welp, I don't really have the free time, but it'll help me start reading again, so why not. I'm in.

Might as well join. I don't know if I'm going for 52 again though. I'll see.

@Frumple: no Amazon where you are? Books are dirt cheap on there o.o

... depends on what you consider dirt cheap. Not sure I'd trust the penny ones, and frankly anything over around quarter is... too much for my pocketbook, at least at the rate I read. And, y'know, shipping. There's a salvation army within walking distance of here (average paperback cost: $.25. Half off sales: Weekly.). If I've got the spare change and the interest, I hit that up until someone dumps something interesting. Which they do, occasionally. Got like 15 of Jim Butcher's books last year.

But! Free (barring 'net charges, but I'm not paying that and would need it for other things anyway, so...) is still considerably less than a quarter. Saved at least eighteen bucks (72*.25. Probably more, since there's about twice that I didn't finish) last year at a book/quarter rate, which is like... one to two weeks worth of food. It adds up, y'know?
