- new personnality system, leading eventually to dwarves deciding themselves of what they want to become.

This is wrong, because that is in the next version.

Well, partly, only.

What would make it complete? They have differing values from their parent civilization, personality traits that actually affect their behavior and life dreams.

Speaking of new version, when is the next time Toady will release a new version of DF?

And I'm a fan of the DF mode so I really look forward to new updates towards that instead of adventure. I mean, so many modders are not active anymore it's kinda disappointing.

I fear that if Toady doesn't release another version of DF soon, there would be a lack of active modders to create/update tools "necessary" to play the game.

 :'( :'( :'(

Certainly not this year.
Possibly in January.
Likely in Febuary.
Almost certainly by March.

Almost.

In terms of these finalizations I've been doing, there are six left.

The newest devlog update gives a glimmer of chance for a March release, but yeah, mid-April is my bet now.
At long last we can stop making the "2-3 months away" kneejerk estimates.

There will be debugging that may take a month in the most optimistic situations.

It always makes me crazy how Toady solves complex situations with simple methods. "Oh yeah, you can smell creatures now", all RPGs in the last years can go to bed.

First of all, each of this items can take several days or even a week. Second, it can turn out each of them must involve another feature to slip in and it might take another week. Finally, do you remember the bugfixing time needed for DF2012? Late May would be an optimistic estimate, so I'm not going to get on the hype wagon and still going to enjoy the actual release in the meantime.

That's not exactly a good example (DF2014 is at least twice as big an update), but the bugfixing time was as far as I can tell exactly two weeks (starting on February 1 2012 and ending February 14 2012) which I don't think has the same effect you were looking for.

A better example would be DF2010, which had about a month AFAIK, but the changes in that one were far more substantial on a level where problems show up (being a total overhaul of creatures and materials AKA literally everything you see in-game).

I just realized something.

I must mod in a special wagon that spawns everywhere and has a bloodhound's nose.

"The wagon smells you!"

It was most definitely more than a month.  Aside from SDL, Toady didn't start focusing on new features until August, which was about 4 months after the 2010 release.

I think putnam meant the final push towards a release, not the bugfixing period after it.

Oops, I'm bad at context today.  It looks like the 2010 pre-release bugtesting started in earnest around Jan 23, so a bit over two months.  The testing team got copies on Feb 14.

My estimate is that the six features will take from a half-day to two weeks each, with a low but non-negligible chance one will blow up into some elaborate rewrite that takes a couple of months.  Then the pre-release testing will take about two weeks if all goes well, perhaps as little as one but quite possibly as much as four to six weeks.  There's also a low but non-negligible chance that some sort of RL life event disrupts coding for a few days or even weeks.  All told, I'd expect to see a version up on the web page between late April and early June, with a small chance of mid April and a significant chance of a slip to around late July, plus a long tail of unbounded decreasing possibility stretching out into the future.  Anyone positing a significantly earlier timeline IMO needs to show their work.

FFS...

We've waited two years for this awesomeness, we can wait a few more months.
