"Controlled" Cave-in Calamity
« on: December 24, 2013, 05:00:06 pm »

So uh, I caved-in some ice to make water, and I can't unpause my game now.  It just keeps falling, freezing and then falling again before anyone can make a move to stop it. I'm going to quit the map, but in the meantime, does anyone know what went wrong and how I can avoid this issue in the future?

Go to your main DF directory > data > init , open the announcements folder, find the cavein announcements, then remove the P and R in the tag following it. If the reports are too spammy, you can also remove the D_D to turn off the ingame announcements. Then when you are done, put the settings back to where they were.

That'll stop the annoying pause and recenter.

I don't really understand what is happening but it sounds funny. Can someone clarify this behavior in the game?

Sounds like the water is trying to freeze, but the tile that is freezing has no support, so cavein. Or something is stuck in a loop.

I've never done a glacier embark, so I don't know.

Try turning off temperature temporarily (long enough to stop the flow or whatever is going on) and see if that ends the loop?

Sounds like this bug - what's happening is that you didn't drop the ice far enough, so the force of the cave-in cause the water to splash up into the ice layer and re-freeze, triggering another cave-in.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

If you turn off temperature, it should allow the current cave-in to complete without creating any additional ice; once everything settles, you should be able to turn temperature back on.

Already quit the map, but for future reference: Is there a set number of floors I have to make it fall? Or does it depend on how many floors of ice I'm caving in?

For maximum safety, you should drop the ice far enough that there's at least 1 or 2 Z-levels of stone above it afterwards.
