where do I start for maximum mod experience?

Sorry for just asking you this, perhaps stupid from your perspective, question, but where do I begin my masterwork journey?
I did not see any thread with large friendly letters saying "Start here, Read this, download this. This is what you need if you are new here!"

I would like to know what should I do to experience the most masterwork has to offer, but those threads are daunting: "Content repository, Last update, Unofficial release".
What exactly do I need to get all of that? The latest version of the mod, with patches and plugins and everything.
Help me please.

Content Repository: All kinds of extra stuff. Not needed.
Latest Release: The last official thing that has been done.
Unofficial Release: The newest dev stuff, with bugfixes and better GUI and source codes and stuff.

I would recommend the official release 4e. If you use Win XP, please use the unofficial release, because it fixes some bugs that are WinXP dependant.

How to start? - There is a large... a massive manual included, with a getting started section.

If you want the more polished variant, use the Studded with Patches release.
The launcher has some manual->Dwarf manual link (You want to play dwarves first, trust me)
Read it, it is a good read. You may not need everything immediatly, but it is nice to know it exists and then you can come back later, when you  need it. Then start playing and die a few times to warlocks etc. :D It takes some time to get used to all the new buildings and the more messy stockpiles, but once you get a hang of it, is is quite rewarding.

Thanks a lot. While poking around I have downloaded 4e, and now messing around that launcher program(like LNP, but better.)
Should be awesome, given there is no wiki to spoil !!FUN!! :)

there is, but we won't tell you :D (okay, it is not that spoilerheavy... but the manual + wiki has some massive spoilers still ^^)

Where do I set what race I will be playing? or is it a random selection from available races?

You can select in the GUI which one is playable. On embark: While on the map and looking for your embark area, tab through the civs... you will see your active civ. You can select one there. :)

I see. Apparently I was unlucky and my world generated with only taiga orcs and kobolds as playable civs(I have got them all selected, but used sandbox pre-set).

Well, if you only want dwarves, simply disable the playable orcs and kobolds, and gen a new world. :)
