First thing? Go to ninite.com, select what utilities I want on the system and get the batch installer from the website. Much better then collecting all that stuff from all around the web.

Nobody mentioned Adobe PDF Reader, which I tend to use a lot just because a lot of stuff I look for on the Internet ends up being a PDF.

I'd go through your browser and remove all the plugins you don't specifically need. Also you never need a toolbar and all the malware toolbars out there have made me skittish. I'm like a long-tailed cat in a room full of toolbars.

1) create rescue disc set for failsafe.
2) Nuke from orbit with DBAN
3) repartition and reformat the way *I* want.
4) Install the OS(es) *I* want.
5) Install the software *I* want.

Doesn't everyone do that?
