Need a functional fortress
« on: December 22, 2013, 06:43:44 pm »

I suck waaaaay to bad at farm management and such to actually create a sustainable fortress. So I'm challenging you to make one for me!

Requirements:
Self sustainable (with minimal overseer intervention hopefully)
Armed with atleast a 4 dwarf crossbow squad, wood/bone xbows/arrows don't matter.
Access to infinite water (Ala a aquifer or river)

Bonus points:
In a 'Good' biome. +10 dorfpoints
In an 'Evil Resurrecting' biome. +20 dorfpoints
Already has iron production started. +10 dorfpoints
Already mining adamantium. +30 dorfpoints
Already has a trap hall. +20 dorfpoints
Has a legendary dining room and/or mist generator. +10 dorfpoints
Already has a mega project started. +50 dorfpoints
Attached to the skybox. +50 dorfpoints

I really just suck and also want to see how others design fortresses. Also to see how others meet the bonus objectives.

I don't understand why you need magma.

Well done OP, you've inadvertently weaponized ghosts.

Plenty for you to check out there. Like 11,000 maps.

Since my post meets ALL your challenges with all the maps you could ever wish for, I win all teh dorfipointses.

Farm management:

Create an advanced world with the base parameters except change embark points to 10,000.
Generate world.
Switch to dwarfhack and type startdwarf 10.
During equip stage, bring 100 of each seed type.
Max out 2 farmers in plant gathering and farming.
Max out 5 dwarfs for fighting. Equip them with steel.
Bring whatever else you want. Bring lots of pots and bags.

Embark.
Dig in.
Bring in your stuff.

Find dirt.

Build a 3x3 stockpile for each seed type. Seeds only, no barrels, no plants, no nothing except seeds.
Build 4 3x3 farm plots with nothing but plumps.
Build a stockpile for nothing but plumps.

Build a still and set to brew repeat.

Build a stockpile for booze only.

Find more soil, do the same thing for pig tails. Then do the same for sweet pods. Then do the same for Cave Wheat. Set all your dwarves except your squaddies to have farm labor enabled in addition to their normal labors.

You will never run out of food or booze, and within a year you will be getting happy thoughts from magnificint drinks or whatever it's called. Then get a cook going making easy meals. Then get a couple of rock crafters going for trading for meat and fish. Those 4 3x3 farms for plumps will provide you with an endless supply of plump helmets. It won't be long before you have literally thousands of them.

Then branch into above ground crops.

Then start a new fort and profit from your newfound knowledge, and name your firstborn Xcorps.

Isn't dfma a pure map/video archive with no or few actual savefiles?

For savefiles, i'd suggest the Dwarf Fortress File Depot: http://dffd.wimbli.com/
Mainly the "Pregenerated Worlds" and "Community Games" files. There should be plenty of good stuff there.

The advice on farming is spot on: for getting started, all you really need is a _no-barrel_ seed stockpile and a few plump helmet patches. Make sure the farms are easy to reach and enough dwarfs have farming labour. Anything fancier can wait until later.

You can get farms going quite easily in a vanilla embark too, without modifying the starting points or number of dwarves.  The default embark includes 5 of each seed.  I like to bump that up to 8, just in case, but I start with a small number of 2x2 farm plots.  If you like to start out with more, bigger farm plots, then go ahead and bring however many seeds you feel you'll need.

The rest has been covered.  Underground soil layer, no-barrel seed stockpile, multiple SMALL plots (not one gigantic one).  Stockpile for plants near the farms.  Still, farmer's workshop, kitchen, loom, clothier's shop, whatever else you do with your plants near the stockpile(s).
