Fresh Newb

Heya folks.

I downloaded the game yesterday and started playing today. I'm so far really enjoying the game. I downloaded a modpack called Ironhand or something to easy things up, the AC font is something i don't like.. Anyway, i've been roaming around the wiki a bit. And ended up with a fortress. I have a few questions though.

  • How do i assign more dwarves to mine? Now i have a poor guy doing all the mining work himself.
  • There's stone everywhere on the ground, how would i remove them? (picture)
  • I'm currently farming Plump Helmets every season, can i have some advice on this?
  • Anything else you think a newb needs to know.

This is my fortress currently:

And this is my poor miner working on the part beneath the fortress:

Any help will be very appreciated! :)

Hit v and then p on the person you want to mine. Select labors, then hit enter on mining. This is how you assign labors.

You should have two plots, one farming on the time the other is off. Just half the year on a plot will keep optimum efficiently.

I don't understand why you need magma.

Well done OP, you've inadvertently weaponized ghosts.

Some labors require tools; if you want to assign more miners you will need a pick for each new miner. You can bring picks on embark or trade them from the caravans. In order to produce picks you have to built a metal industry with smelter and forge.

On farming there is an extensive thread sticky at the top of this forum.

In case you haven't seen it yet, there is a quickstart guide:

In short: Build a trade depot, wait for the caravan, move crafted items or cooked meals to the depot and send your broker to the depot and trade.
Wiki article:

The trading menu is a bit tricky; don't "offer" things, offers are gifts. Maybe it is wise to watch a let's play video to understand the whole process.

Let your mason make doors and furniture and your craftsdwarf stone pots for food and alcohol storing and crafted items for trading.

It's almost always ok to leave stone scattered. For more information see http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2012:Stone_management

The fortresses are penal colonies.
The mountainhome has far too many degenerates too deal with by itself, so it sends out minor nobles to establish penal colonies across the world.

Thanks guys.

Everything was going fine until i did something very very stupid.

My miner was mining downstairs and i accidently commanded him to remove 1 stair, but i accidently made him remove the other one too. I didn't notice this until he... died of dehydration. Now i don't have a miner. Is there any way to regain access downstairs or is my fortress doomed? Thanks!

To get to his pick you would need another pick. Your only chance would be the caravan. Or you could make one, if you happen to have any metal that you could make and forge into a pick.

I'm still waiting for a caravan to arrive, my dwarves are slowly becoming unhappy and causing damage to each other and having tantrums, how do i cease this? I really fucked up. I got a shit ton of drinks and butcher animals frequently but they're not happy with that. I made furniture but how do i place them?

Place furniture using the (b)uild menu. Use 'q' to turn the furniture into rooms and assign the rooms. Bury dwarfs by building and placing coffins, then using 'q' to set them to be used for burial. Remember, losing is fun!

I will suggest that you download dwarf therapist it does make it a lot easier to get an overview of who can do what and assign tasks.

If you downloaded the standard game I will also suggest that to find the latest version of Lazy Newb Pack (and that is not V15 as the wiki said last time I checked) that will fix a lot of small bugs + make it a bit easier to play in general and you don't have to give up your current game.
