I've been quite enjoying Prospector lately, I'm wondering if anyone has recommendations for similar games? Space/planet exploration with things to do throughout rather than the front or rear-loading issues a lot of games have.

I have, but I'd gathered it was basically a less feature-rich version with better UI and graphics. What's it like now then?

My memories are a few months old too. From what I remember, it felt similar enough to Prospector, but more lite. More generic, somehow. Not quite the same kind of fun, but scratches the itch.

never tried it myself, but maybe this "Aurora" could fit as a Prospector-like game
http://www.roguebasin.com/index.php/Aurora
Quote
Aurora is a space exploration roguelike game, heavily inspired by Star Control 2 and Prospector. Player takes command of a scout starship, that is sent from Earth to explore outer space, establish contacts with other species and bring anything valuable back home. And when we say 'scout starship' we don't mean that small unarmed one-man thing. We mean a real ship, with dozens of crew members, with on-board laboratories and workshops and its own military regiment.

looks like it was going to get a steam version but it seems things didn't go that way in the end, both the game website and its steam page are down.
Still can be downloaded from its bitbucket :
https://bitbucket.org/e_smirnov/aurora/downloads/

For a 1st person real time game in the same space exploration / planetary landing / ship and crew members management genre, there's Genesis Alpha One that had some really good ideas (like building your ship, walking around it, defend your crew if your ship get an alien infestation etc...)

I don't have any idea what Prospector is like but are you familiar with the X series?

I'll mention Outer Wilds (best game ever made) and No Man's Sky. But I get the feeling they aren't quite what you are looking for.

a bit sad that latest Prospector source code never landed on some github thingy, considering how good it was (it even had a +150 pages thread on bay12) , i'm sure some people with coding talent would have been interested to continue developing or forking it (as unfortunately Prospector ceased development nearly 5 years ago)

Played Outer Wilds, loved it, and I'm forever sad I can't go back into it with no memory. NMS just looks a little too empty for me to enjoy.

Hmm, wonder if it'd be possible to contact the dev and ask? I couldn't code it, I've made a couple of forays into coding and just... I dunno, feel like I'd need actual lessons, it's not something I could self-teach and even then I'm not sure I'd actually enjoy it or find it interesting enough to pursue.

Somewhat, that's another area I'd be interested in really. Something like a Starsector/X-series hybrid would be pretty cool.

On the old outdated google code website for prospector, there's an email adress on the bottom of the FAQ to contact Magellan (the dev) if you're interested.
https://code.google.com/archive/p/rlprospector/wikis/FAQ.wiki

No idea if it's still working (as the google code website is from 2012 apparently ) but i can't find any other contact info on the (now mostly dead since a few years) current prospector website and board.

Looks like Toady managed to do a soccer-like "hat trick" , locking 3 Cataclysm threads on the same day.

This made me think about soccer and old memories of Kick Off and Sensible Soccer , i was wondering if there was an actual open source soccer game, either management or play

I played in the past YSoccer ( https://ysoccer.sourceforge.net/ ) that is very inspired by Sensible Soccer , i heard about Eat the Whistle ( https://sourceforge.net/projects/etw/ ) and Tux Football ( https://sourceforge.net/projects/tuxfootball/ )
For management, i heard about Bygfoot Football Manager ( https://sourceforge.net/projects/bygfoot/ ) with a potential continuation Open Foot Manager ( https://github.com/sturdy-robot/openfootmanager )

But is there something else around soccer that could be interesting ?

This was the best soccer game I've ever played :V

... i mean, i think it's also the only soccer game i've ever played, but still.

If we're talking soccer, Alexi Lalas International Soccer for the PS1 is a genuine masterpiece. The right level of actual good soccer game and negligent refs so you can actually cripple half the other team out by the end of a game. My cousins and I still play this whenever we get together.

The best football (soccer) game I've played is Ganbare! Super Strikers, which takes a turn-based combat approach to the beautiful game. If you bought an Itch bundle a few years back it might have been on it.

Years ago, I used to enjoy RedCard on the PS2, which understood that illegal tackles is the best part of a football game.

After having googled more, it seems like soccer is not very popular in open source development, as out of the titles i mentionned it does not seem there's anything relatively "big".

Outside of the open source category, for management soccer i still recommend Championship Manager 01/02 that is free since several years, especially as there are database update nearly every 6 months that bring the database to current days.

You can find everything : https://champman0102.net/index.php
I highly recommend Nick's patcher too
https://champman0102.net/viewtopic.php?t=1392
As it fixes several bugs and improve some quirks of the game (the idle CPU usage is a must) and include various patches of other people.

For gameplay soccer, i have been surprised how the Sensible Soccer series are holding brillantly, the gameplay is still really unmatched for arcade soccer even today.
