Heat Signature is barely an RPG. Aside from traits and starting equipment, each playable character is almost exactly like every other and completely interchangeable. In fact, you're encouraged to retire characters often because progress is artificially slowed otherwise.

It's a fun top-down action/stealth hybrid, but it's not what I'd call an RPG.

I've always seen heat signature as Hotline Miami the roguelike (with pause!)

A playthrough of Banner Saga is probably around 10 hours - I haven't played 2 and 3, but certainly the first one was impressive and enjoyable. Skirts the line of RPG, in the traditional sense, though.

I would say it counts. Banner Saga is a story focused game that takes place in a rich world, following the journeys of interesting characters, who level up, and you can customize their stats while fighting in turn-based combat.

The only Rpg feature that it lacks is exploration.

Needs some suggestions for RPGs under 10 hours in length, maybe 12 hours tops.

Not rougelikes or highly procedurally generated
Not Super Mario RPG, since I've played that countless times already
Retro, consoles, RPG maker stuff ok, so long as the user interface isn't overly clumsy
Otherwise the quality of the game doesn't matter.  It can be very poorly made and unbalanced, so long as it isn't a hassle to issue commands/navigate menus/equip stuff/etc

Wildermyth is under 10 hours.  Uh, its not highly procedurally generated in that there are fixed campaign options?  ???

Anyone know of any good society/trade multiplayer games with populations around the 60-100 range where players take on certain "roles" or "trades" and contribute based on their role instead of doing everything themselves?

The best examples I can think of that fit this are Space Station 13 and Gary's Mod rp servers.

Another game I can think of that scratched this itch for me was Wurm Online. I absolutely love multiplayer games that have a quality/rarity trade on items that scales with how much your level is, making higher quality items produced by specialists much more sought after.

I just can't seem to find anything new or I haven't played these days. That game called Farwoods that had its own thread seemed interesting but I dunno if the player count is high enough for it to be enjoyable or not.

There is a game called Foxhole where you are a gear in the military machine. You need to mine materials, process those materials into supplies/vehicles, deliver the supplies to the frontlines, and consume them to push the front line into enemy territory and build entrenchments and defenses. Supplies include binoculars, guns, ammo, shirts (spawn tokens), various grenades, medical kits, mortar rounds, gas masks and filters, mines, tank shells, gasoline, and more.

Now you could try to do this all yourself but in order to win the game big clans form to focus on logistics and whatnot. So the correct way to play it is to pick a role and roll with it until you get bored.

Another game that ticks these boxes is Barotrauma. It feels a little unfinished and goofy right now but it was inspired by SS13 and looks to be heading in that direction, but with submarines.

This is wild, I just started Foxhole installing from my Steam library, then opened this thread and immediately saw someone asking for recommendations of games that sound like Foxhole, followed by someone else already recommending it. Noice.  8)

It would be kinda cool to see games with a similar vibe with player roles/trades in other settings (like, say, a lawless, Wild West-style frontier where human ingenuity, entrepreneurial spirit, colourful characters and unprecedented technological advances meet greed, ruthlessness and all the darkest facets of humanity? Yeah, I've been vaguely longing for a game along those lines for a while), but Foxhole's war basis allows them to avoid the stagnation that would normally be inevitable in a large-scale multiplayer building game, unless you had an endless map or occasional, salt-inducing pwipes. I haven't played in ages but I'm pretty keen to get back into it, maybe find a better regiment or whatever this time.

Barotrauma sounds really interesting. I remember hearing a lot about it a while back, but I only recently realised it was co-op. I might have to take a closer look at it.

Any really tough puzzle games out there? Or games that have content hidden behind being extra-creative with your puzzle?

For example, I found that The Talos Principle was awesome.

Really late response, but, The Fool and his Money. Obscure one, I think I have heard about it only once without actively searching for it. It is a collection of hard and tricky puzzles, mostly word-related. Many require a notepad or a dictionary to search for new words. I’m not into puzzles, so I solved just a handful, but because of puzzles’ creativity and looks of the game I jump at opportunity to recommend it to someone. The Fool’s Errand, it’s predecessor, has mostly simpler and more ordinary puzzles, like “find words in a screenful of letters” or “assemble a puzzle”, but also has some headscratchers.

Thanks for the suggestions for RPGs to play.

I stumbled upon a free fan made remake of Dungeon Master.  I think I'll give that a go.

Man I love Dungeon Master but that fan remake has none of the charm of the old art style.

This made me remember : excellent Return to Chaos works good on window 10 (at least for the few minutes i replayed it to check)
Quote
Return to Chaos (hereafter RTC) is my Windows version of the FTL classic "Dungeon Master", originally released on the Atari ST and Amiga in 1987, and its sequels "Chaos Strikes Back" and "Dungeon Master II". Whilst I make no claim to the idea, graphics or sounds, the program itself was entirely written by myself; mostly as a work avoidance tactic in my final couple of months at university. I started writing RTC to learn as I went along the basics of game programming and as such it is the first and only game I have ever written; please be tolerant with any bugs you find! I wish to thank those denizens of the 'Net who have play tested the game exhaustively - I hope this game brings as much pleasure to you as it did to me whilst writing it. Good luck and have fun.

Well this may be dumb and maybe I am thinking of the wrong game...but I thought dungeon master was more about building a dungeon and taking care of it? These look more like RPGs. Or did dungeon master go from a dungeon building game to an RPG at one point? It looks the same from what I remember so I imagine that must be what happened

Not to hijack the dungeon master RPG, but is there anything newer or re-made or fanbased that is about building dungeons?

Oh...yeah then I was being dumb and remembering the wrong game lol. They look the same from what I remember of "Keeper"

I added in the edit, but is there anything newer or fan re-make or anything that works better on newer windows/pcs that is about building dungeons? Or mods for games? I haven't looked at Dwarf Fortress mods in a while but maybe I should see if there is any DF mod in that vain
