Wish I could retire a fort as a permanent settlement
« on: December 21, 2013, 02:10:12 pm »

Cobaltseed has succeeded. I have not turned the HFS into a luxury resort, or even completely walled off the caverns, but the only serious threat in a long time was when I let out the HFS (not having read spoilers), and my military managed to kill it before I lost more than half my dwarves, and no tantrum spiral ensued (hooray for waterfalls!). I'm not even producing food anymore because I let food production get so out of control we probably have a hundred years' worth stored. I make everything out of green glass and obsidian, both of which I can make more of. Okay, and steel, which I would eventually have to trade from the dwarves once my layers of marble and magnetite ran out. I haven't even needed my underground tree farm because I'd made all the steel I've needed by the time it was ready. Goblin sieges get cast into obsidian for easy iron collection. Forgotten beasts with syndromes get the same treatment. The FPS is getting low, and I'm not that interested in megaprojects just now.

In short, I'm done with the fort. I want to start a new one somewhere more exciting, and I'd like all the history I've built up with this fort to appear as legends in the next one. But abandoning this fort when there's nothing wrong with it just seems wrong. Shouldn't it be possible for this fort to go down in history as a new permanent dwarven settlement? Maybe I would need to become the dwarven capital first, but it would be nice if I could be a source of migrants clad in giant leopard leather for future forts without the fort falling first...

Nope, you can't.

For now at least. Next version comes with fortress retirement, which is the feature i want the most.

Yeah, I'm thinking that will be the best added feature.

This thread is why I love dwarf fortress. We start at engravings of wagons and end up using necromancy to raise them from the dead, and were-wagons.
I jumped off a ramp in a cave and exploded.

I seriously doubt it. With all the changes it's just not worth the effort for Toady to spend time making old worlds compatible when you can just gen a new one. It's not even certain early saves in the next version will remain compatible with the bugfixed versions coming after, if like last release there are some particularly nasty bugs popping up.

I wish I could non-destructively retire forts as well since i often get bored with them and don't like simply abandoning a perfectly good fort.

That at least, will be possible in the next version.

Best of all, with a bit of creative designing, you should be capable of making massive fortress complexes, spanning the entire map.

There is basically no chance the next version will be compatible. We're talking a total redo of the combat system, a personality rewrite, and 3D trees. And that is just the three things off the top of my head.

But on the other hand since you're almost done with this fort you should be ready to make a new fort in the new version.

You can use DFHack and "retire" a fort, but i've never used it (the cheat in particular that is), I don't know how well it works.

Yeah, I'm trying to have this one last until then.

(DfHack to retire a world)

It doesn't. It leaves the site in a not-properly sorted out state in terms of entities, history and such. It runs a big risk of making the world unstable/corrupted.

Adv mode and fortress mode are very different beasts under the hood.
(Basically, you "retire" the fortress by hacking the mode into adv mode, then immediately retiring the character you assume control over, which saves the game as a concluded adv mode game, even though the site is a fortress mode site.  The site is not properly sanitized, and the game is in an unstable state from switching gears like that. While you "can" do that, it won't have the effect uou are looking for. Believe me.)

Just wait for the new release here in a few more months. It will have what you are looking for.

I retired my last one due to fps issues, and if I'd known about retirement, I wouldn't have abandoned.  if you can put aside the fort and its world for now inf your mind and gen a new world, that could work, but it's best  maybe to wait until the new version to get into a new one.  It's a ways off mind.  I'm predicting February at least.
