Been a couple years, but still no ammo pickup

I don't see the bug where hunters/marksdwarves refuse to pick up ammo being discussed much lately, but after coming back to DF after a long break, I find it's still the case that none of my hunters or crossbow-dwarves will ever pick up any ammo.  Is there some workaround for this problem that has become common knowledge or anything?  Any help greatly appreciated.  Really surprised this hasn't been fixed yet :(

They have trouble with bins. Make ammo stockpiles without bins.
