So news has broken via the folks at
Steamdb that Steam is giving publishers the right to allow their games to be gifted across regions or not. It was discovered shifting through the recent Metal gear Rising: Revengeance data when a very strange tag was found (This was apparently first used in Sonar X3 software a few hours before however).
The strange tag:
Name Steam Sub 36077
Name (Store) METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE
...
AllowCrossRegionTradingAndGifting NoMost of the information seems to be coming out of a
NeoGaf thread.
Current information indicated that this is currently only affecting South America and Eastern Europe (Slavic) countries. While this is most likely an attempt to stop gray market trading and curve unofficial key resale it does present dire consequences for countries that are suffering from price gouging, censorship and forced/terrible regionalisations/translations.
VPNs are being recorded as being able to get around this current restriction but VPNs have already been demonised by Valve and are in no way a solution.
I'm sure there are members of the community (myself included) from places such as Australia, Germany, New Zealand, Russia and Brasil that have to import games or trade with international friends to get around the previously mentioned problems. Other problems about these restrictions could include not being able to buy games when travelling overseas or just not being able to buy a friend who lives overseas a game.
If restrictions are really expanded it could even force customers to have to use regional only retailers and such things as buying games internationally on Greenman Gaming or Amazon could become a thing of the past.
I hope to see some discussion on this topic and also be the first to say a big "fuck you" to PlatinumGames/Konami.
