Questions about clothing
« on: December 19, 2013, 07:22:00 pm »

So I have a dwarf locked in a room.

I've dumped a full outfit down with him and unforbid it but he insists on sitting about naked.

How can I (without putting him in the military or using dfhack) get him to wear the clothes?

Also some other clothing related questions:

- What clothing will dwarfs wear by default if it is free and available? No one seems to be putting on gloves for example.
- Is there a way to force a dwarf (ie a child) to wear more clothes?

I'm not certain but my first guess would be that he claimed some other articles of clothing outside of his oubliette, and won't wear any others because he wants the ones he can't reach.

Putting him in a squad would be the way I'd force the issue.

As near as I can tell, they want One Of Everything, unless that conflicts with something they are already wearing.  If they don't have a loincloth, and you kill a goblin that's wearing one, then someone's gonna claim that loincloth and wear it, if it's dwarvenly possible to fit it over their other lower body attire.

If nobody's wearing gloves, then they must have some other handwear that's interfering.  (Or they've claimed other gloves that they can't actually reach, so they won't wear the ones they can reach.)

They seem to follow the same One Of Everything rule the adults do.

I thought they only took one for each body part, so either skirt, trousers or loincloth, but not a combination of lower body wear.

I've jsut dumped a whole bunch of freshly made clothing into a room full of unclothed dwarfs.

No one is picking up anything :( I think they must all want goblin clothing from outside which they aren't allowed!

are all the goblin stuff forbidden? you could try that, then use dfhack cleanowned if it still didn't help.

Here is what I did which is causing the problem
- Add dwarf to military with empty uniform set to replace
- Station him somewhere and then lock him in
- forbid his clothes
- remove him from military
- Dump clothes into the room with him, they will be ignored
- Unlock room... he still won't go put any clothes on... and will now stay naked indefinitely... or at least that seems to be the problem I'm having.

I let everyone out of their locked room and they all ran and picked up other clothing.

I still have two naked dwarfs who won't put any clothes on. Their happiness is going down. I've tried cleanowned and also tried unforbidding all clothing from the stock screen. :(

are those two dwarfs still in the military?

also, if you want your dwarves to wear specific clothing, you have to keep all unowned/unwanted clothing forbidden until you can trade it away (and you'll need to pause before you unforbid and mark everything for trading...)

personally i don't care what my dorfs wear as long as they have enough on to avoid unhappy thoughts...

They'll claim (and if possible wear) one for each _layer_ for each body part. I.e., both "under" and "over" for the feet - socks and shoes; "under", "over" and "cover" for the upper body (e.g. shirt, robe and cloak). For the lower body/legs, there are three "under" clothing types available - thongs, loincloths and braies. If any of those become available, dwarfs will claim them and put them on. And they'll commonly wear them until they fall apart. In addition, "over" clothing will be worn, like trousers and skirts. Outside of military uniform assignment, they won't take multiple items for the same body part and layer, though - a military dwarf may be able to wear three skirts simultaneously, a civilian dwarf will only wear one.

You can check clothing ownership through the normal display - 'v'iewing an item will display its owner. This holds for loose items that have been claimed but aren't worn (yet). Dwarfs who try to equip fresh gear will claim an item first, reserving it for their use, before they actually pick it up and try to wear it. This leads to soldiers with no-clothes uniforms regularly claiming clothes without ever wearing them, thus blocking them for the use of civilians.

Looking at a dwarf's general information screen ('z' from unit view) also shows their 'owned items', which currently means nothing but their civilian clothes, both claimed and worn. It only mentions the number, but if a naked dwarf boasts 14 owned items, you can be sure they've _claimed_ a full set of clothing, they just may have trouble getting hold of it.

I wasn't aware that clothing claims ignore pathing, but it doesn't surprise me in the least.
